This collection consists of sixteen letters written by Tom Wolfe to Carol LeVarn McCabe. McCabe was a Sweet Briar student who later worked in publicity and as a writer. Thirteen of the letters were written between 1952 and 1954, while Wolfe was attending graduate school at Yale. The letters discuss Wolfe's social life and ambitions, his writing and his efforts to be published, and his relationship with McCabe. Three letters date to 1969. Anthony Horton was an African-American man who for a period of his life was homeless and lived in the tunnels beneath the subway trains. Together with author/artist Youme Landowne, Horton wrote and illustrated "Pitch Black: Don't be Skerd" (2008) which tells the story of how the two met, his background and his life underground. Horton worked with the Theater of Oppressed NYC, frequently playing the role of a police officer in the troupe's performances. He died in a fire that ripped through his underground home. The Anthony Horton Collection consists of a mock-up for the book he and Youme Landowne wrote and illustrated together, "Pitch Black: Don't be Skerd," about Horton's life in the tunnels under the New York City subway system, and letters he wrote to his co-author/friend from 2009-2010. The letters discuss their friendship and his thoughts; most were written while he was an inmate in Downstate Correctional facility in Fishkill, New York. According to Landowne, he was incarcerated because of possession of an antique knife that he wanted to sell. There are additional writings along with original artwork and illustrations. less

Bernard Shaw, born George Bernard Shaw, was an Irish writer of novels, plays, poems, short stories, and literary criticism. The item is a manuscript copy of George Bernard Shaw's letter to the editor of The Times of London, dated February 2, 1909, published on February 5, 1909. Shaw responds to a letter published in The Times on January 29, 1909 by English writer H.W. Mallock. Mallock had criticized remarks on income inequality made by Keir Hardie, M.P. at a Labour Party conference in Portsmouth, England on January 27th, as reported by the press. Shaw defended Hardie and questioned Mallock's knowledge of socialism and political economy in general, initiating an exchange of letters in the newspapers. The manuscript, in an unknown hand, is accompanied by an undated typed transcript of the item (3 pages), and a small half-tone photographic portrait of Shaw less

Grace Moore was an American soprano who sang at the Metropolitan Opera and other opera houses. She married Valetin Parera in 1931 and was also known as Grace Moore Parera. She died in an airplane crash near Copenhagen. Includes letters informing Grace Moore of honors, notes inviting her husband and herself to official occasions while traveling in Europe, 3 personal letters from Grace Moore to her friend Humphrey Doulens and 1 letter from Val Parera to Doulens soon after Grace Moore's death. During the Second World War she organized and performed in hundreds of lunch time concerts at the National Gallery which had been emptied because of the threat of air raids. Marjorie Yates, a pianist and friend of Myra Hess, was born in England and moved in 1926 to the United States, where she taught music until 1968. Henriette Michelson was a piano teacher at The Juilliard School in New York City during the 1930's and 1940's, and later a resident of Jerusalem. Lilly (or Lily) Popper was Henry Cowell's colleague in a school of music. 13 TLS written from San Quentin Prison where Henry Cowell was serving a sentence for a morals charge, later pardoned. He discusses prison life, work in the jute mill, difficulties of continuing music composition in a restricted setting, authorship of a book on melody, concerts for the other prisoners, teaching in the prison's education department, study of Spanish and Japanese languages, letters he has received from other composers and friends, concern for the school in his absence and recommendations for studies and administrative matters there, and his gratitude for efforts made on his behalf. In the final letter he has learned that his sentence will be 15 years, of which he must serve at least 4. less

In 23 ALS and 2 postcards, Marguerita Sylva's salutations progress from "Dear Mr. Chamberlain Brown" to "Dear Chamberlain" but she consistently discusses bookings, concerts, and acting roles. Other papers include business letters from other agents to Mme. Sylva, and programs and brochures with marginal notes in Sylva's hand. He became a Roman Catholic in 1944. Morris Hochberg was a conductor and violinist, and his wife Sylvia was a noted pianist. Their daughter Rena was born in 1944.
