Dame Myra Hess (1890-1965) was an English pianist. During the Second World War she organized and performed in hundreds of lunch time concerts at the National Gallery which had been emptied because of the threat of air raids. Marjorie Yates, a pianist and friend of Myra Hess, was born in England and moved in 1926 to the United States, where she taught music until 1968. Henriette Michelson was a piano teacher at The Juilliard School in New York City during the 1930's and 1940's, and later a resident of Jerusalem. Tobias Matthay (1858-1945) was an English piano teacher, author of works on piano technique, and composer. Grace Moore was an American soprano who sang at the Metropolitan Opera and other opera houses. She married Valetin Parera in 1931 and was also known as Grace Moore Parera. She died in an airplane crash near Copenhagen. Includes letters informing Grace Moore of honors, notes inviting her husband and herself to official occasions while traveling in Europe, 3 personal letters from Grace Moore to her friend Humphrey Doulens and 1 letter from Val Parera to Doulens soon after Grace Moore's death. Lilly (or Lily) Popper was Henry Cowell's colleague in a school of music. 13 TLS written from San Quentin Prison where Henry Cowell was serving a sentence for a morals charge, later pardoned. He discusses prison life, work in the jute mill, difficulties of continuing music composition in a restricted setting, authorship of a book on melody, concerts for the other prisoners, teaching in the prison's education department, study of Spanish and Japanese languages, letters he has received from other composers and friends, concern for the school in his absence and recommendations for studies and administrative matters there, and his gratitude for efforts made on his behalf. In the final letter he has learned that his sentence will be 15 years, of which he must serve at least 4. less

William Hayman Cummings was an English organist, composer, singer and writer, author of Purcell (1881), a biographical dictionary (1892) and other works about English music. 29 ALS from 17 correspondents commenting about Cummings's book, Purcell, then sending more information about Henry Purcell and his family and contemporaries. Marguerita Sylva (1875-1957) was a mezzo-soprano and actress on whose business stationery for "Sylva Management" in New York is printed "The World's Greatest Carmen.". In 23 ALS and 2 postcards, Marguerita Sylva's salutations progress from "Dear Mr. Chamberlain Brown" to "Dear Chamberlain" but she consistently discusses bookings, concerts, and acting roles. Other papers include business letters from other agents to Mme. Sylva, and programs and brochures with marginal notes in Sylva's hand. Charles (Borromeo) Mills, 1914-1982, was an American composer of chamber music, orchestral works including movie music and ballets, and vocal music including sacred choral works. He became a Roman Catholic in 1944. Morris Hochberg was a conductor and violinist, and his wife Sylvia was a noted pianist. Their daughter Rena was born in 1944. Mills lived in New York City, and the Hochbergs in Detroit throughout the correspondence. 83 ALS in ink or pencil from Charles Mills, 3 ALS from Charles Mills and his wife Pat or Patricia, 3 ALS from Patricia alone, and 1 ALS from a later wife Selma, all to Morris Hochberg, Morris and Sylvia, or Morris, Sylvia and Rena Hochberg ; 1 ALS from Charles Mills to oboist Lare Wardrup, sent in care of Morris Hochberg. Citizens for a Quieter City was a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to the reduction of urban noise. Founded by Robert Alex Baron, its objectives were to develop information about the injurious effect of noise; research methods of controlling and reducing it; and educate the public on the importance of its abatement. The Citizens for a Quieter City records (1950-1980) document the work of the organization through correspondence with government and private sector officials; sound and video recordings; meeting minutes; records of noise complaints; scrapbooks; financial records; posters; and published research and information on noise pollution. The collection also holds the records of the Upper Sixth Avenue Noise Abatement Association and Robert Alex Baron's files regarding his job as general manager of Theatre Tours. less

Theodore Walter "Sonny" Rollins (born September 7th, 1930) is an American jazz tenor saxophonist. His papers, dating from the 1910s to 2015 (the bulk dates from the 1950s onward), document the musical, personal, and career development of one of the most important musicians and artists of the 20th and early 21st centuries. This development can be most clearly observed in his music manuscripts and practice material; personal writings; letters; and professional business records. Rollins's career is also illustrated by an extensive set of photographs and a large collection of unique sound and video recordings. less

The Berry family collection consists of seven pieces of correspondence, apparently written by members of the Berry family, dating from 1863 to 1918, and spanning three states and Europe. There is also one typescript entitled "My Bit in the World War or the Story of 2921486." The correspondence begins with James Tate in West Point Georgia, although his wife and children appear to be in Mobile, Georgia, or Alabama. The other writers appear to be his wife, son, and nephew, although their relationship to Tate is not indicated. The documents cover important periods and topics in African-American history. James Tate's letter, written in 1863, expresses the anguish and difficulties African Americans faced with trying to establish and maintain a family while enslaved. A letter dated June 20, 1868 documents the role of a Black church as "post office;" the writer indicates mail for him and news for other people in town can be sent care of the church pastor. The letter from Olivia Tate dated July 28, 1887 describes her excitement at the possibility of a "Great Colored National Fair" in Georgia to exhibit the "arts, mechanics and productions of colored people throughout the union." Both of the letters written by Henry S. Berry during World War I, in 1918, tell of his experience in the Army's Medical Unit, 331st Labor Bureau. He expresses his pride in being a soldier and tells how the army built character. The autobiographical typescript, "My Bit in the World War, or the Story of 2921486," is twenty-five pages long and follows Berry, a member of the American Expeditionary Forces, from the receipt of the telegram calling him to duty to being one of fifty men chosen for the Army Medical Department, through war torn France. The typescript seems not to have been finished. Throughout this piece as well, is the theme of pride in being a good soldier. less
