William "Billy" Skipper was a dancer, choreographer and filmmaker. Skipper danced with all the greats of Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s. He choreographed for musical theater throughout the United States. Skipper produced two films, one about the famous dances of Ruth St. Denis, the other about Tallulah Bankhead. Included in the collection are photographs, manuscript drafts, correspondence and office files. less

Jesse W. Levy (1918-1991) was a personal assistant to Tallulah Bankhead (1902-1968) the film and stage actor. Composer; cornetist; bandleader and publisher, W.C. Handy's fame rests upon his work as a composer. Handy wrote and published more than 150 songs and arrangements of folksongs, mainly spirituals and blues. Anderson Lawler was a stage and screen actor, later a producer. Born in Russellville, Alabama, in 1902 (some sources say 1904), Anderson Lawler acted in several stage plays in the 1920s, went to Hollywood in 1929, and acted in a number of films over the next ten years, including BE YOURSELF! (1930) with Fanny Brice, George Cukor's GIRLS ABOUT TOWN (1931), Frank Capra's AMERICAN MADNESS (1932), RIPTIDE (1934) with Norma Shearer, and EVER SINCE EVE (1937) with Marion Davies. Lawler also worked as a talent scout, and after 1939 he gave up acting and served as an associate producer for 20th Century Fox, for whom he produced Joseph L. Mankiewicz' SOMEWHERE IN THE NIGHT (1946). Returning to New York in the 1950s he produced several plays, including OH MEN, OH WOMEN. Anderson Lawler died of a heart attack on April 6, 1959. The Anderson Lawler correspondence spans 1927-1959, and consists mostly of telegrams, most of them from Lawler to his mother sending best wishes on various holidays and other occasions, and sometimes giving updates on his career. In addition to the notes from Lawler, there are brief messages and invitations from such Hollywood notables as George Cukor, Janet Gaynor, and Tallulah Bankhead. A late 1920s program from the Mayfair Club of Los Angeles displays two pencilled caricatures of actress Lupe Velez. less

The collection, dated 1921 to 1968, consists of scrapbooks created by Young dedicated to the career of Bankhead. Two of the scrapbooks focus on other actors. Artist Rafael Valdivia was born in Rosario, Argentina. Before joining the staff of the New York Sun, ca. 1926, he worked for magazines in Buenos Aires, Paris and Madrid. Valdivia's work for the New York Sun was published under the name "Rafael." He lived with his wife and two sons in Jackson Heights, Queens, N.Y. Valdivia died at St. Anthony's Hospital in Woodhaven, Queens, N.Y. at the age of 62 in 1948. Includes ca. 142 black and white original portrait drawings of theater and film actors and actresses by Rafael Valdivia, mostly for the newspaper, the New York Sun. Among those depicted are Tallulah Bankhead, Katharine Cornell, Bette Davis, Maurice Evans, Miriam Hopkins, Gertrude Lawrence, Robert Montgomery, and Laurence Olivier. less
