Richard Wagner in Dresden; VI. Paris 1867) in Tägliche Rundschau Unterhaltungs-Belage, hrsg. von Dr. Friedrich Lange, Nr. 115, 121, dated 1894 May 20 and 27. Captain Percival Drayton (1812-1865) of Charleston, South Carolina and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was a distinguished U.S. Navy officer who served in the Union Navy during the Civil War. The Percival Drayton family papers, 1827-1967, chiefly document Percival Drayton's naval career, particularly during the Civil War. Drayton's papers, 1827-1865, comprise correspondence, naval orders and reports, a diary, financial papers, and certificates. The remainder, 1845-1967, consists of papers created or received by other Drayton family members and relatives, as well as ephemera, photographs, and printed material, mostly pertaining to Percival Drayton. Also included are letters written by an unidentified relative, a naval notebook, and later family correspondence regarding Drayton's naval service, as well as two manifest books for shipments of tobacco in the Maryland-District of Columbia area, 1803-1817, their connection to the Drayton family being unclear. less

Lester Polakov, set and costume designer, was born in 1916. He began his career designing sets in summer stock from 1936-1940. From 1938-1941 he worked on Broadway shows as an assistant to designers such as Harry Horner, Boris Aronson, and Albert Johnson. In 1973 he designed the sets for Robert Wilson's play THE LIFE AND DEATH OF JOSEPH STALIN. His other works include: THE EMPIRE BUILDERS; MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING; THE WINNER; and RIGHT YOU ARE, among others. He has also created designs for industrial stage shows, exhibitions, and films. From 1955-1958 he taught theatrical design at Columbia University, and from 1958 to the present he has been the director of the Lester Polakov Studio of Stage Design, now known as the Studio and Forum of Stage Design. The Lester Polakov Papers and Designs consist of papers, photographs, set designs, and technical drawings regarding his set designs for numerous productions. less

Between 1837 and 1844, inventor Alfred Lewis Vail worked together with Samuel F.B. Morse in the development and spread of the telegraph. In 1848, Vail moved to his home town, Morristown, New Jersey, and spent the last ten years of his life conducting genealogical research. Materials range in date from 1827 to 1953, with the majority of the records falling between 1890 and 1947. Albert Shaw (1857-1947) was an editor, journalist and scholar who spent most of his career as the editor and publisher of the Review of Reviews, a digest of progressive thought and political analysis. Shaw's principal interests were the improvement of municipal government, the relationship of business and organized labor, agricultural reform, international affairs, and contemporary politics and economics, topics which he wrote and spoke on frequently. less

Alexander Frank (1866-1939), was a stage actor, first in England and then, after 1900, in the United States, where he was also a motion picture actor and director. Born in Boston, England, Alexander Frank initially worked as a political secretary for a Member of Parliament, but turned instead to acting. After receiving his early training from Sir Henry Irving and making a number of appearances on the London stage, he came to the United States around 1900. Mr. Frank acted opposite many of the leading actors of his era, and belonged to the companies of such major figures as James K. Hackett and Olga Nethersole. Mr. Frank acted in several films between 1913 and 1920, and also directed, but later restricted himself to stage work as a performer. Mr. Frank's last major role was in Elsie Schauffler's play Parnell in 1935, in which he portrayed British Prime Minister William E. Gladstone, whom he had met in his youth. The Alexander Frank papers span 1902-1920 and consist of contracts, correspondence, and a notebook. The collection is split between contracts for various plays and theatrical companies, and correspondence, encased in mylar, consisting of letters of recommendation from Mr. Frank's past employers to prospective ones. There is also a small notebook, which holds four pages of sketchy pencilled notes concerning Medieval England. less
