James Wilkinson (1757-1825) of Maryland was a United States Army officer and first governor of the Louisiana Territory. Wilkinson was implicated in the Burr Conspiracy and resigned from the Army in 1815. He was later appointed U.S. envoy to Mexico and died there in 1825. Suspicions that he had long been an agent of the Spanish government were confirmed after his death. The collection consists chiefly of letters written by Wilkinson to military personnel and politicians, especially at Fort Washington during the Northwest Indian War and later 1790s. Recipients include John Armstrong, 1792; Bartholomew Shaumburg, 1796, David Holmes, 1812, and James Monroe, 1814. Wilkinson’s letter of 1823 April 17, Mexico, to an unidentified correspondent (probably to Thomas Aspinwall, U.S. Consul in London), describes the election of Agustín de Iturbide as emperor of Mexico. Also included is Wilkinson's 1793 bill to the government for expenses of his servants, and an order of payment to James Wilkinson by Joseph Reed, 1781.

Oliver Wolcott Jr. (1760-1833) was United States Secretary of the Treasury, 1795-1800; United States Circuit Court judge for the Second Circuit, 1801-1802; and governor of Connecticut, 1817-1827. Oliver Wolcott Jr. letters and documents, 1799-1826, contain three letters written or signed by him regarding government business to Governor Jedediah Huntington of Connecticut, 1799; to Governor Isaac H. Williamson of New Jersey, 1818; and to Lieutenant Colonel George Bomford, 1823; and a signed printed circular letter to the Governor of Ohio (Jeremiah Morrow), 1825, regarding state resolutions to emancipate the slaves. A personal letter to James W. Henry at Baltimore, 1807, introduces Virgil Maxcy; and a letter to Wolcott's wife Betsy with a torn date [December 1800] tells of the close electoral vote count for Burr and Jefferson in the presidential election. Also included are signed certificates for civil and military appointments, 1817-1826; an order to his bank for Archibald Gracie, 1806; and a clipped signature.

Smith family documents, 1736-1942, consist primarily of deeds and other contracts concerning the Smith family of Brookhaven, N.Y. The collection includes indentures for land transactions, records of road surveys, wills, articles of agreement for employment, tenant leases, subpoenas, land search records, specifications for building a house, mortgages, accounts, receipts for payment of back taxes and a small amount of correspondence. Also present are inventories of household items, farm implements, and livestock in the possession of Joshua and Lucy Smith at the time of his death in 1811, and of their son Richard Wallace Smith's household items at the time of his death in 1868, as well as a photocopy of a Smith family tree.

The Hasbrouck family papers include original documents and copies of documents relating to the Hasbrouck family of New Paltz, New York, 1730-1858. The bulk of the papers are comprised of legal documents such as indentures, wills, and financial documents including property lists, account books, and receipts. The papers belong predominantly to John Hasbrouck; Elias Hasbrouck (1741-1791), a merchant from Woodstock, Ulster County, NY; and Richard M. Hasbrouck. Other family members represented in the collection include Susannah Hasbrouck, Abraham Hasbrouck, Elizabeth Hasbrouck, Phoebe Nordstrom, and William Conklin. Items of note include John Hasbrouck's undated school exercise book; a list dating from 1777 of the losses sustained by Elias Hasbrouck "in the burning of Esopus," and a 1764 letter from Henry Remsen to Elias Hasbrouck, discussing the new act passed in Parliament preventing trade with non- English islands.

Clapp family members lived in New York City, Westchester and Dutchess Counties, N.Y., and Fairfield County, Conn. The Clapp family papers include 17th and 18th century financial records, land records, and estate records of the Clapp family of New York and Connecticut. The financial records primarily consist of promissory notes, 1722-1772, many of which relate to the debts of John Clapp. Also present are Thomas Clapp's accounting records, dating mostly from 1804-1815, and additional miscellaneous receipts and accounts. Land records relate to properties owned by the Clapps in New York City, Greenwich, Conn., 1723-1769, Westchester County, N.Y., 1705-1807, and Dutchess County, N.Y., 1740-1770. A purchase deed for land in the Bowery Ward of New York City by John Clapp is the oldest land record in the collection, dating from 1694. Estate records include wills, inventories, debts, sale accounts, and lists, notably the 1737 will of James Clapp. Family members include Benjamin, Cornby, John and James Clapp. Other family names mentioned in these documents include Cornell, Birdsall, Flamen, Franklin, Gerbrantz, Mean, Quinby, Sharpas, Vail, and Hallock.

The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel was originally built as the Waldorf Hotel at Fifth Avenue and 33rd St. in New York City in 1893 and was merged with the Astoria Hotel in 1897. The hotel was torn down in 1929 and the new Waldorf-Astoria Hotel opened in 1931 on Park Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets. The collection contains records of the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City from the opening of the Waldorf Hotel in 1893 to the closing of the Waldorf-Astoria in 1929. Most of the records cover the period from the 1890s through 1917. Included are guest registers; hotel correspondence of managers Oscar Tschirky and Willard H. These papers of William Chandler, Lieutenant in the United States Navy, include a logbook, a journal, text books and notes about seamanship and navigation, and other related materials. Included is a logbook of the U.S. prize schooner Patuxent which Chandler, the ship's commander, kept from October 7-November 25, 1845 while en route from Monrovia to New York. The first part of the logbook is missing, and entries end while the ship was in Bermuda undergoing repairs. There are remarks about chronometer no. 114 at the back of the volume Chandler's journal of a cruise aboard the U.S.S. Constellation from Norfolk, Virginia to the West Indies, Key West, and Pensacola, Florida, contains entries made between July 28, 1835 and February 15, 1836. He mentions reinforcements and protection given to residents of Tampa, Florida. Other materials in the collection include text books on seamanship in the U.S. Navy (1832); watch, quarter, and station bills of the U.S.S. Grampus (1837); notes on seamanship (1839); stations and missives of the U.S.S. St. Mary's (1848); watch and quarter bills, stations, and missives of a frigate (1854); and a list of the leading lights of St. George's (Irish) Channel (1864)

Robert Lenox Belknap, the New York businessman most prominently represented in this collection, was a direct descendant of Abraham Belknap (d. 1643), an early settler in Salem, Massachusetts; and Joseph Belknap (1630-1712) of Boston. The Center and Innes families counted author Henry Livingston and Francis Lewis, signer of the Declaration of Independence, among their ancestors. Dr. Deas Murphy, father of Serena Deas Murphy Center, served as Chief of Surgery at St. Luke's Hospital, New York, N.Y. The William Conrad Kopper and Serena Deas Murphy Center genealogical research files contain family papers and genealogical research pertaining to the Belknap, Center, Innes, Murphy, and allied families. He was an Anti-Federalist during the Confederation and Constitutional periods, known for his writings as "Rough Hewer" and "Sidney" in the New York press. Yates held many elected and appointed offices, notably Albany alderman (1753-1773), high sheriff of the city and county of Albany (1754-1759), chairman of the Albany Committee of Correspondence (1775-1776), and member of the four New York Provincial Congresses and the State's first legislative convention (1775-1777), chairing the committee to write the State's constitution. He then served as New York State senator (1777-1790), Continental Loan Officer for New York (1779-1786), delegate to the Confederation Congress (1787-1788), and mayor of Albany (1790-1796). The Abraham Yates Jr. papers, 1688-1920s (bulk 1754-1795), chiefly span his professional and political activities in New York from 1754 until his death in 1796, reflecting his work as sheriff, lawyer, Revolutionary War patriot, public official, political essayist, and avocational historian. Also present are early 20th-century typescript copies of materials in the collection.
