The Peter Gennaro Papers consist of dancer, dance teacher and choreographer Peter Gennaro’s production materials, such as scripts, correspondence, audition and production notes, and musical scores of numbers which were choreographed by Peter Gennaro. Materials date from 1954 to 1982, although the majority of the musical scores are undated. The collection constitutes only a small fraction of Gennaro’s professional life, with little contextual information. There are no personal materials in this collection. less

Manuel Alum was born in Puerto Rico, but his dance training and his career as a modern dancer, teacher, choreographer and director took place mainly in the United States. He was a leading dancer and assistant director of the Paul Sanasardo Dance Company, and then founder and director of the Manuel Alum Dance Company. He also performed solo works and concerts, and choreographed for other companies. The most important materials in this collection pertain to works choreographed by Manuel Alum: 2 notebooks and some additional pages which contain choreographic notes and corrections, background material, a few music notes and costume sketches, and some personal notes or memos. Also included in the collection are biographical materials and lists of works choreographed by Alum, and a few items of correspondence and a contract. less

Martha Hill, a pioneer in the field of dance instruction, served as the first director of dance at The Juilliard School from 1951 until 1985. She mentored several generations of important dancers and choreographers through her teaching and work with dance festivals, government committees and nonprofit organizations devoted to promoting dance. The bulk of this collection relates to Hill’s involvement with these organizations. less

Stella Bloch was an ethnic dancer and artist. Bloch took dance lessons from the Isadorables and then learned native dances of the Near East during a year long trip in 1920. During the 1930s and 1940s she wrote film scripts. In the 1950s with a move to the East Coast, she began to concentrate more on drawing and painting her surroundings. Her work captures Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance. Included in the collection are correspondence, personal papers, writings and photographs. less

The Richard Englund Papers cover the professional career of Richard Englund (1931-1991), a noted American dancer, choreographer, director, and teacher. Englund served as the director of several small dance companies, including the pioneering regional ballet company, Birmingham Civic Ballet, and training companies for both American Ballet Theatre and the Joffrey Ballet. The largest part of the collection documents the choreographic works that made up the repertory of the companies with which Englund was connected. less

American dancer, writer, and teacher of tai chi, Sophia Delza had an exceptionally long and varied career. She achieved prominence as an independent modern dance performer and choreographer, but embarked on a second career as an authority on Chinese dance and martial arts traditions. During a stay in China, Delza became the first American dancer to teach modern dance technique in Chinese theater and dance schools. Following her return to the United States, she became an important tai chi instructor and advocate. The collection includes her writings, correspondence, photographs, programs, and original artwork. less

Hadassah was a pioneer of Israeli and Indian (Hindu) dancing in America, and a choreographer of rare taste and artistic integrity. Hadassah was also a well-admired instructor, who taught Israeli and Indian dance workshops across the United States and abroad. She was a faculty member, board member and chairwoman of the ethnic division at the New Dance Group Studio in Manhattan. less

The Leon Danielian Papers document the career of the American ballet dancer and teacher through an extensive set of photographs, as well as a more limited selection of correspondence, clippings, financial records, and teaching materials. Danielian, a native New Yorker of Armenian ancestry, enjoyed an especially varied career as a performer, but is best known for his long association with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Following his retirement from the stage, Danielian taught ballet for nearly thirty years at the American Ballet Theatre School and the University of Texas at Austin. less

She was also an educator, teaching Modern Dance at the University of Jamaica in the West Indies, Northwestern University and Barnard College. Klarna Pinska was a dancer, instructor and choreographer who studied under Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn at the Denishawn School in California and New York. She studied further under Charles Weidman and Doris Humphrey. Pinska was committed to teaching dance and movement and influenced a generation of young children though her instruction and productions. The Klarna Pinska Papers contain materials from most of her professional career, and focus on her time working as Ruth St. Denis’ assistant and her teachings in the 1960s and 1970s. The collection also contains correspondence and photographs providing insight into the life of 20th century modern dance. The music scores were used in Pinska’s works, teaching as well as her own career as a dancer. Some of the scores were property of the Denishawn School. less

She established small companies that both toured and performed at festivals. La Meri's school during the 1940s and 1950s was named ethonoligic Dance Center.
