Frederick S. Dellenbaugh (1853-1935) was an explorer, artist and author. As the artist and assistant topographer on John Wesley Powell's second Colorado River expedition, 1871-1873, he helped to prepare the first map of the Grand Canyon. He was a cofounder and lifetime member of the Explorers Club, served on the board of directors for the Eastern Association on Indian Affairs, and was the American Geographical Society's librarian from 1909-1911. His papers include correspondence, a diary of the Powell expedition, manuscripts and drafts of his writings, research notes, sketches, photographs, newspaper clippings, and other printed matter. less

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) was an English poet, journalist, author, and critic. His literary criticism included works about Robert Browning, Charles Dickens, and George Bernard Shaw. Francis Vinton Greene (1850-1921) was an American soldier, engineer and author. His military duties included serving as military attaché in Russia in 1877, teaching at West Point, and commanding volunteers during the Spanish-American War. In 1903 he was appointed Police Commissioner of New York City. He also worked as an engineer on various projects and wrote military histories. Collection consists of Greene's correspondence, his papers pertaining to service in the Spanish-American War, speeches, miscellaneous materials, and books. Correspondence, 1801-1921, includes general correspondence; letters from Theodore Roosevelt, Major General Emory Upton and General William Tecumseh Sherman; and family letters. Spanish-American War papers, 1898-1900, contain orders, telegrams, accounts, reports, and some correspondence. Speeches, 1898-1918, were given by Greene as a soldier, businessman and police commissioner. Miscellaneous papers, 1801-1915, consist of a wide range of materials relating to all aspects of Greene's life and include genealogical information, orders, maps, memoranda, drafts of articles and reports, notes, photographs, and clippings. Edith O'Shaughnessy (d. 1939) was an American author of fiction and autobiographical narratives concerning her life abroad. She was active in causes related to the Roman Catholic Church. Her husband, Nelson O'Shaughnessy (1876-1932), was a U.S. career diplomat who was stationed in Denmark, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Mexico. After leaving the diplomatic service, he had a career in private industry. Elim O'Shaughnessy (1907-1966), Edith and Nelson O'Shaughnessy's son, joined the diplomatic service and served in France, the Soviet Union, Britain, and Hungary. Collection contains materials relating to Edith, Nelson and Elim O'Shaughnessy. Correspondence of Nelson O'Shaughnessy, 1899-1928, concerns diplomatic matters, his career in business, and personal and family affairs; correspondence of Edith O'Shaughnessy, 1907-1936, relates to her social and diplomatic life, war work in France, political activities, career as author of books and articles, and family matters. Rossiter Johnson (1840-1931) was an American author and editor. In addition to editing historical and reference works, he wrote biographies, histories and poetry. He and his first wife, Helen Kendrick Johnson (1844-1914), were ardent anti-feminists who belonged to various organizations opposed to women's suffrage. Helen Johnson was also an author and editor. Collection contains the Johnson's correspondence, accounts, writings, notes, photographs, and printed matter. Rossiter Johnson's papers consist mainly of correspondence with family members and literary, social and political associates. Other materials are accounts, speeches, notes, and printed matter. Rushmore G. Horton (1826-1867) was editor of The Weekly Day Book (later the New-York Weekly Caucasian and the New-York Weekly Day-Book Caucasian), a New York City pro-slavery newspaper, as well the author of several publications, including The Life and Public Services of James Buchanan, The History of the Tammany Society, and A Youth's History of the Great Civil War in the United States, from 1861-1865. He was secretary of the Anti-Abolition States Rights Society and an active participant in the anti-abolitionist movement in New York State. The Rushmore G. Horton papers include correspondence, autographs, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous personal and financial papers. The collection includes letters to Horton, John H. Van Evrie, and Nathaniel R. Stimson as editors of the New York Weekly Day-Book Caucasian, as well as personal letters to Horton and his wife from George Pope Morris, Samuel F.B. Morse, William G. Brownlow, George Ripley, James Kirke Paulding, William Winter, Thomas H. Seymour, Thomas F. Bayard, and William H. Peck, and autographs by such notable figures as James Buchanan, James A. Richard Henry Stoddard (1825-1903) was an American poet, author, editor, and literary critic. He worked as a customs inspector and in the Dept. of Docks in New York City; then as literary reviewer for the New York World from 1871 to 1876; city librarian, 1877; and from 1880 until his death, he was literary editor of the Mail and Express. His wife, Elizabeth Drew Barstow Stoddard (1823-1902), was a poet and author. Collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, notes, and other papers. Correspondence is with friends of the Stoddards and literary figures in America and Great Britain. Manuscripts are of poems by Richard H. Stoddard and others. Rodman Gilder (1877-1953) was an American editor and author. He was editor of Criterion and Credit Monthly and wrote on various subjects. The best known of his literary works is The Battery New York, a History (1935). He was also the archivist of Century Associates. Collection consists of notes and sources for Gilder's writings, papers relating to the history and business operations of the Century Company between 1913 and 1914, and some personal papers. Materials for Gilder's writings include correspondence, typescripts of articles, and research notes for biographies of Don Marquis and Joan of Arc. Edward Hugh Sothern (1859-1933) was an American actor and author who appeared on the New York and London stages; Julia Marlowe (1865-1950) was a successful actress in New York. They became co-stars in 1904, were married in 1911, and toured, mainly in Shakespeare plays, until her final retirement in 1924. Sothern devoted much of his later years to public readings, lectures and writing. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, theatre materials, financial and legal papers, and photographs. Correspondence, ca. 1860-1950, is between Sothern and Marlowe and with colleagues, family and friends; other correspondence concerns business and legal matters. Albert Sonnichsen (1878-1931) was a writer, adventurer, and naval seaman who participated in some of the most significant events of his era, both locally and internationally. The Albert Sonnichsen papers primarily consist of papers, relating to his experiences in Macedonia, 1906-1907, and the Philippines, 1899-1903, including correspondence, photographs and original diaries. Also found in the collection are Albert's father Nicolai (Nicholas) Sonnichsen's consular documents, a personal narrative relating to his capture and imprisonment by the Union Army during the Civil War, and a diary by D.A. Berenice Skidelsky (1887-1984) was an American writer, editor and lecturer. Skidelsky, who also used the pseudonyms Berenice E. Noar and Burton E. Skidell, began her career writing stories for pulp magazines. She wrote short stories and a novel, was a book and movie critic, and became the literary editor of Vogue magazine in 1927. She lectured on political and current events, with a special focus on U.S./Soviet relations. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, diaries, printed matter, and photographs. Correspondence, 1904-1972, is with notable authors, editors, family, and friends. Writings, 1913-1950, include Skidelsky's early work for magazines and her book reviews. Bolton Hall (1854-1938) was an American lawyer and author. He prepared the expurgated text of the King James version of the Bible (called The Living Bible) in addition to writing and speaking on topics such as social reform and political economy. He was a founder of the Longshoremen's Union and the New York Tax Reform Association, was a disciple of Henry George, and an advocate of the single tax and model tenement housing. Collection contains Hall's writings, correspondence, personal papers, and scrapbooks. Charles Hanson Towne (1877-1949) was an author, editor and popular New York celebrity. From 1924 to 1929 he edited many magazines including Smart Set, Delineator, Designer, McClure's, and Harper's Bazaar. He also wrote poetry, novels, plays, travel essays, song cycles, lyrics for musicals and operettas, memoirs, and newspaper columns; taught poetry at Columbia University; and toured with the Broadway hit, Life With Father. Much of his writing celebrated New York City and he was considered to be the quintessential New Yorker. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, financial papers, press clippings, photographs, and ephemera. Correspondence, 1924-1948, contains letters from Towne's friends and fans, many of them prominent in literature and the arts; occasional copies of his replies; and his outgoing letters, 1918-1931. Charles Lenz (1840-1914) was a journalist, author and editor in the U.S. Although he was born and educated in Germany, he served in the U.S. Civil War and participated in the suppression of the New York City draft riots in 1864. He edited several New York German language newspapers as well as Original Rights Magazine and Capital and Labor. An ardent abolitionist and Republican, he concentrated his literary efforts on "progressive Protestantism" and anti-Catholicism. Collection consists of manuscripts and typescripts of portions of his posthumously published work Cassock and Sword (1915), an analysis of the future of American politics in terms of an international Catholic conspiracy. less

Charles Nordhoff (1830-1901) was an American journalist and author. He edited the New York Evening Post from 1857 to 1871, was the New York Herald's Washington correspondent from 1874 to 1890, and wrote political works and books about the sea. He advocated the Union cause in the U.S. Civil War. Charles Robert Knight (1874-1953) was an artist, writer and paleontologist. He did paintings and models of prehistoric animals for the U.S. government and museums in New York City and elsewhere. He also painted a series of murals for the American Museum of Natural History. In addition to his art work, Knight wrote books and articles on animal anatomy and psychology and on prehistoric man. Harold Gould Henderson (1889-1974) was an American author, teacher, translator, and anthologist of Japanese poetry. He taught the history of Japanese art at Columbia University, was president of the Society of Japanese Studies and the Japan Society from 1948 to 1952. In 1945 he served in Japan on General Douglas MacArthur's staff as special advisor on education, religion and art.
