Artist and gay rights activist Copy Berg was born Vernon E. Berg, III on July 10, 1951. He attended the United States Naval Academy from 1970-1974 and then served with the U. S. Navy Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. In 1975 the Navy sought to release him by General Discharge on grounds of homosexuality. Berg fought a highly publicized legal battle against the Navy but lost the case and was released in 1976. He settled in New York where he studied at Pratt Institute and launched his career as an artist. In 1986 Berg was diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). His subsequent artwork explored the social response to the AIDS epidemic, sexual politics and sadomasochism. Berg died of an AIDS-related illness on January 27, 1999. The Copy Berg Papers include correspondence of the artist, his friends and his family; records of Berg's service in the United States Navy and his discharge dispute; artwork; photographs; audio and video recordings; printed material and ephemera. less

Harold Van Buren Magonigle (1867-1935) was an American architect, artist and author. He achieved his greatest success as a designer of monuments but his artistic talents extended to sculpture, painting, writing, and graphic design. Collection consists of Magonigle's correspondence, writings, architectural papers, photographs, sketches, and printed matter. Includes general and personal correspondence with colleagues, academic figures and editors; correspondence and related papers, 1912-1928, as president of the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects and as president of the American Academy in Rome Association of Alumni; and papers, 1901-1907, relating to the William McKinley Memorial in Canton, Ohio, which Magonigle designed; typescripts of his principal works on the history, theory and technique of art; his plays; articles published in architectural journals; addresses and lectures; photographs and pencil sketches of some of his designs; personal papers and printed matter. Frederick S. Dellenbaugh (1853-1935) was an explorer, artist and author. As the artist and assistant topographer on John Wesley Powell's second Colorado River expedition, 1871-1873, he helped to prepare the first map of the Grand Canyon. He was a cofounder and lifetime member of the Explorers Club, served on the board of directors for the Eastern Association on Indian Affairs, and was the American Geographical Society's librarian from 1909-1911. His papers include correspondence, a diary of the Powell expedition, manuscripts and drafts of his writings, research notes, sketches, photographs, newspaper clippings, and other printed matter. less

George Peter Alexander Healy (1813-1894) was an American portrait painter. He studied in Paris and painted in the U.S. and Europe. His best known works were portraits of Daniel Webster, Longfellow, and a series of U.S. presidents. Collection contains correspondence, notes, family papers, photographs, and printed matter gathered by Thomas R. Hay for a biography of Healy written by Marie De Mare. Correspondence consists of letters concerning Healy's presidential portraits, photostats of letters by Healy, and family correspondence. Eugenie M. Heller (1868-1952) was an American artist who studied and worked in New York and Paris. During World War I she served on the staff of the American Red Cross. Collection consists of correspondence and personal papers related to Heller's career and work with the Red Cross. Correspondence, 1917-1921, is with artists and writers; letters, 1900-1912, are from Robert Collyer; and correspondence and papers, 1917-1921, concern her work with the American Red Cross at various hospitals in New York City. David McNeely Stauffer (1845-1913) was an American civil engineer, editor, artist, and collector. He worked for several railroads including the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad until 1876 when he went into private practice. He wrote scholarly articles and edited the Engineering News. In addition to collecting autographs and illustrations, he designed book plates and did pen and ink drawings. Collection consists of Stauffer's personal papers and his autograph and seal collection. Personal papers contain correspondence, 1865-1910; financial papers; notes; sketches and illustrations; manuscript; and transcripts of historical correspondence. Autograph collection of historical and literary figures of the 18th and 19th centuries includes artists, clergy, educators, inventors, engineers, lawyers, authors, doctors, scientists, and officers of the American Revolution and other political figures. less

Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932) was an American art dealer, collector and connoisseur of books and prints. He began his career as an art dealer in Boston in the late 1860s. A decade later he joined the New York firm of Wunderlich & Company; in the 1890s he became head of the firm and changed the name to Kennedy & Company. Collection consists of letters and sketches sent to Kennedy by James McNeill Whistler and others. Letters, postcards and telegrams from Whistler, 1887-1902, concern the artist's work and social life in London and Paris. Also included are several illustrative sketches in ink and pencil. Remainder of the papers consists of letters to Kennedy from associates, 1910-1918, and copies of letters written by Whistler to persons other than Kennedy. less

Edwin Willard Deming (1860-1942) was an American painter and sculptor. He studied in New York and Paris and painted scenes from his visits with Indian groups in the Southwest and West of the U.S. Collection consists of correspondence of Deming with his family plus four photographs. Letters were written while he attended the Art Students League in New York City, and from Chicago, Mexico and Paris. Some of the letters include sketches done by Deming illustrating his experiences. less

Charles Robert Knight (1874-1953) was an artist, writer and paleontologist. He did paintings and models of prehistoric animals for the U.S. government and museums in New York City and elsewhere. He also painted a series of murals for the American Museum of Natural History. In addition to his art work, Knight wrote books and articles on animal anatomy and psychology and on prehistoric man. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, sketches, photographs, and printed matter. Correspondence, 1892-1952, is with museums, libraries, societies, academic institutions, magazine and newspaper publishers, and associates and relates to Knight's work as an artist and writer. Family correspondence, 1885-1949, includes letters between Knight and Hardcastle family members. Correspondence of Lucy Knight Steel, 1847-1964, concerns her father's work as well as her work and family. Writings of Charles R. Knight contain typescripts and drafts of his work, including his autobiography. Thomas Allibone Janvier (1849-1913) was an American journalist and author; Catherine Ann Drinker Janvier (1841-1922) was a painter and author. They traveled extensively in Mexico, England and France and wrote guidebooks, fictional works and translations. While living in Provence, Thomas Janvier wrote several studies of the region and its people and Catherine Janvier translated works by Provencal authors. During their travels they collected manuscripts, pamphlets and other printed works related to Provence and Mexico (they donated many of these works to the New York Public Library). Collection contains correspondence, papers concerning the Provencal movement and Mexico, miscellaneous papers, and Spanish and Mexican manuscripts. General and subject correspondence, 1877-1908, includes letters to and from the Janviers regarding publishing arrangements and social matters, Provence and Mexico. Papers relating to the Provencal movement, 1894-1908, include correspondence with Provencal authors and poets, notes and printed matter. Mexican materials, 1886-1895, consist of correspondence, notes, printed matter, and two votive paintings on tin. Miscellaneous papers contain notes taken by Thomas Janvier for his histories of New York City and printed matter. Spanish and Mexican manuscripts date from the 17th and 18th centuries and include tax lists and estate papers. less

Collection consists of incomplete typescript of Kaufmann's memoirs in English with a portion in German; scripts of two plays by Kaufmann; and miscellaneous papers including clippings, photographs, catalogs of his art exhibitions, reproductions of his paintings, and two original sketches. less

Alice Heighes Donlevy (1846-1929) was an artist and advocate of industrial art education in the schools. She worked as a painter, illustrator and weaver and wrote and lectured on the art of illumination. In 1867 she became a founding member of the Ladies Art Association and was active with the Woman's South African League, the Woman's Auxiliary League of the Boer Relief Fund, and the Woman's Memorial Fund. Collection consists of personal correspondence and papers in addition to correspondence and ephemera relating to Donlevy's involvement with various organizations. Correspondence, 1860-1911, contains letters to Donlevy, many concerning Ladies Art Association activities, such as arrangements for classes, lectures, exhibits, and other programs sponsored by the Association. Some of the letters document the lives of women in the latter part of the 19th century. Correspondence also includes materials relating to Donlevy's Boer relief activities. Records of the Ladies Art Association, 1867-1900, consist of correspondence, financial records, minutes, and printed matter. Woman's Memorial Fund papers, 1889-1895, include correspondence, legal papers and printed matter. Materials related to the Woman's Auxiliary League of the Boer Relief Fund and the Woman's South African League (ca. 1900-1903) include correspondence, notebook and photograph of Eliza Verplanck Richards, petitions and records of assistance to Boer prisoners and refugees, and printed matter. less

Albert E. Sterner (1863-1946) was an American painter, etcher and lithographer. He opened a studio in New York City in 1885, was one of the founders of Painter-Gravers of America, and taught at the Art Students League. His paintings were purchased by and exhibited at museums in Europe and the U.S. Collection consists of letters to Sterner and his wife from artists, actors, authors, musicians, and political figures relating mainly to art and cultural matters. less

Paul N. Craig (1885-1962) was an artist, minister, singer and voice teacher who resided in Independence, Missouri for much of his life. Collection consists of letters dating from 1908 to 1911, written by Craig while an art student in New York City to his future wife Jeannette V. Kelley (1887-1978) at Independence. The bulk of the letters date 1908-1909, documenting his training at the New York School of Art (now Parsons The New School for Design) under the tutelage of Frank Alvah Parsons, his boarding life at the YMCA, his exploration of Manhattan's neighborhoods and its cultural offerings, and other outings. Also discussed are his religious beliefs and attendance at services of various denominations, including those of his own faith, the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (now the Community of Christ), in Brooklyn. Letters for 1910-1911 are less frequent, marking his move to an apartment and employment as a commercial artist. His growing affection for New York City and its impact on his faith and character are discussed throughout. Letters are annotated in pencil with dates matching envelope postmarks. Some musical and church programs, along with a small sketch of Craig with a toothache, are included in the letters. less

Letters from French avant-garde artist Henri-Pierre Roché to American poet and art aficionado Jeanne Robert Foster from 1924 to 1925 and 1958 to 1959 .The letters focus on their mutual friendship with John Quinn during the period of his declining health and death, Roché's participation in the appraisal of Quinn's estate, reactions of various friends and colleagues to Quinn's death, and arrangements for the 1926 memorial exhibition. The letters imply a close romantic relationship between Foster and Quinn. Roché also discusses his affair with Helen Grund Hessel, wife of German writer and translator Franz Hessel, and one letter contains an enclosure from Helen ("Helaine") to Foster. Many letters also pass along greetings and news regarding "Germaine," presumably referring to his friend Germaine Bayle rather than his former wife, Germaine Bonnard. Other letters acknowledge that Roché had burned Foster's incoming letters at her request. less
