Frederick S. Dellenbaugh (1853-1935) was an explorer, artist and author. As the artist and assistant topographer on John Wesley Powell's second Colorado River expedition, 1871-1873, he helped to prepare the first map of the Grand Canyon. He was a cofounder and lifetime member of the Explorers Club, served on the board of directors for the Eastern Association on Indian Affairs, and was the American Geographical Society's librarian from 1909-1911. His papers include correspondence, a diary of the Powell expedition, manuscripts and drafts of his writings, research notes, sketches, photographs, newspaper clippings, and other printed matter. less

Joseph Sabin (1821-1881), Joseph F. Sabin (1846-1926) and J. Percy Sabin (1872-1934) were the principal proprietors of the family firm of book, autograph and print dealers doing business in the U.S. and England from 1842 to 1934. Joseph Sabin compiled the Dictionary Catalogue of Books Relating to America, a bibliography of all books published in America or elsewhere pertaining to America. His son Joseph F. and grandson J. Percy continued the business of the firm and collected Americana and materials related to George Washington. Collection consists of correspondence, notes, financial records, and other papers that document the publishing and bookselling careers and personal lives of three generations of the Sabin family. Correspondence, 1859-1931, refers to both family and business matters. Correspondence concerning publication centers on the Dictionary Catalogue of Books Relating to America, published by the Sabin firm from 1868 to 1892. Robert Bonner (1824-1899) was a newspaper publisher and trotting horse breeder. He owned and published the New York Ledger. Collection consists of general correspondence, trotting horse papers, financial documents, writings, photographs, and artifacts. General correspondence includes letters to Bonner as proprietor of the New York Ledger, with a few drafts of his replies, mostly from contributors offering stories, suggesting plots, soliciting money, acknowledging remuneration, and relating to personal matters; letters from Presbyterian clergymen about church affairs; and letters from the owners of the New York Sun, New York Herald, and New York Times, revealing Bonner's willingness to lend financial aid to those newspapers. Papers relating to the breeding, development, and shoeing of trotting horses contain letters from owners, breeders, veterinarians, editors of sporting journals, and others from all parts of the United States, especially Kentucky; notes on horses; accounts; scrapbooks of newspaper clippings containing biographical data and other material on the horse and on the Scotch Irish Society of America; and photographs, sketches and artifacts. less

Papers consist of a diary and correspondence belonging to American seaman John Thompson. Diary was kept from Sept. 1879-1880 on board the U.S.S. Alaska on a trip from Panama to Peru, where the ship docked at Arica, Coquimbo, Callao, Ancud, Mollendo, Pisco, and Chimbote. Mentions blockade and some battles of the Tacna Arica dispute between Chile and Peru. From Peru, the ship sailed to Ave Maria Bay (Nu Khiva) [sic], Marquesas Islands; and Samoa, where the ship docked at Pago Pago and Apia. From there, the ship traveled to Honolulu, San Francisco, and Mare Island, California. Also included are sketches; a letter to Thompson dated Sept. 20, 1881; and letters dated 1877 from "Warren" (perhaps a relative), who served as a sailor on the ship Independence on a trip from Boston to Valparaiso and Iquique, Chile. less

Julia Anna Hartness (1819-1879) of Albany, N.Y. married George C. Lay (1815-1881) of Lyme, Conn., a businessman, in 1841; five of their children survived to adulthood. The Lay family resided in New York City. Diaries kept by Julia Anna Hartness Lay, 1851 Aug. 9-1878 Jan. 20, record her thoughts and daily activities concerning family and household matters; her children's health and upbringing; attendance at lectures, concerts and church services; evangelical and charitable work as a member of the Presbyterian Church; social and recreational activities; and weather conditions. Local and national events mentioned in passing include the Atlantic Cable celebration in 1858, and incidents of the Civil War, including the Draft Riots. The diaries contain pasted newsclippings and memorabilia, and a small amount of sketches, memorabilia and family correspondence in pockets. less

Vincent Raschella (1863- ), artist and aeronautic inventor of gliders and dirigibles was born in Italy. After he was unsuccessful in persuading the Minister of War in Italy to adapt one of his designs for wartime use, Raschella emigrated to the United States in 1899, where he continued to work on his designs. Papers, written mainly in Italian, reflect Vincent Raschella's career as an artist and aeronautic inventor. Papers contain letters written to Raschella in Italian, writings, sketches in pencil and ink of his inventions, newspaper clippings, and photographs of an automatic shoe shiner. less

Claude G. Leland (1874?-1950) was the Superintendent of Libraries for the Board of Education of New York City from 1903 to 1943. He served in the U.S. Army from 1898 to 1903 and again from 1914 to 1919. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, notes, sketches, maps, photographs, and printed matter that relate to Leland's military service and library career. Bulk of his papers concerns his book, From Shell Hole to Chateau with Company I, and includes manuscript and typescript copy of the work, notes, maps, photographs, post cards, and sketches. Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932) was an American art dealer, collector and connoisseur of books and prints. He began his career as an art dealer in Boston in the late 1860s. A decade later he joined the New York firm of Wunderlich & Company; in the 1890s he became head of the firm and changed the name to Kennedy & Company. Collection consists of letters and sketches sent to Kennedy by James McNeill Whistler and others. Letters, postcards and telegrams from Whistler, 1887-1902, concern the artist's work and social life in London and Paris. Also included are several illustrative sketches in ink and pencil.
