Everett Pepperell Wheeler (1840-1925) was an American lawyer and civil service reformer. He was a founder of the New York Bar Association and served for seventeen years as chairman of the executive committee of the New York Civil Service Reform Association. Other organizations he supported were the Citizens Union, the Committee of Seventy, the Reform Club, and the Man Suffrage Association. Collection consists of correspondence, legal and real estate papers, articles, speeches, maps, photograph, and printed matter. General correspondence, 1882-1925, mainly concerns Wheeler's opinions on World War I, Armenian immigration, and womens suffrage. Francis Vinton Greene (1850-1921) was an American soldier, engineer and author. His military duties included serving as military attaché in Russia in 1877, teaching at West Point, and commanding volunteers during the Spanish-American War. In 1903 he was appointed Police Commissioner of New York City. He also worked as an engineer on various projects and wrote military histories. Collection consists of Greene's correspondence, his papers pertaining to service in the Spanish-American War, speeches, miscellaneous materials, and books. Correspondence, 1801-1921, includes general correspondence; letters from Theodore Roosevelt, Major General Emory Upton and General William Tecumseh Sherman; and family letters. Spanish-American War papers, 1898-1900, contain orders, telegrams, accounts, reports, and some correspondence. Speeches, 1898-1918, were given by Greene as a soldier, businessman and police commissioner. Miscellaneous papers, 1801-1915, consist of a wide range of materials relating to all aspects of Greene's life and include genealogical information, orders, maps, memoranda, drafts of articles and reports, notes, photographs, and clippings. Mary Garrett Hay (1857-1928) was an American suffragist and civic leader who was active in the New York suffrage movement. She helped Carrie Chapman Catt set up the offices of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in New York in 1895. Hay was president of the New York State Federation of Women's Clubs from 1910 to 1912, chair of the League of Women Voters in New York City from 1918 to 1923, and served the Republican Party in various official capacities. Collection consists of scrapbook with materials related to Hay's career. Scrapbook contains letters, reports, clippings, leaflets, pamphlets, speeches, and photographs pertaining to her work on behalf of women's clubs, the Republican Party, suffrage, and the League of Women Voters for the years 1895 to 1928. Robert Bonner (1824-1899) was a newspaper publisher and trotting horse breeder. He owned and published the New York Ledger. Collection consists of general correspondence, trotting horse papers, financial documents, writings, photographs, and artifacts. General correspondence includes letters to Bonner as proprietor of the New York Ledger, with a few drafts of his replies, mostly from contributors offering stories, suggesting plots, soliciting money, acknowledging remuneration, and relating to personal matters; letters from Presbyterian clergymen about church affairs; and letters from the owners of the New York Sun, New York Herald, and New York Times, revealing Bonner's willingness to lend financial aid to those newspapers. Papers relating to the breeding, development, and shoeing of trotting horses contain letters from owners, breeders, veterinarians, editors of sporting journals, and others from all parts of the United States, especially Kentucky; notes on horses; accounts; scrapbooks of newspaper clippings containing biographical data and other material on the horse and on the Scotch Irish Society of America; and photographs, sketches and artifacts. less

Rodman Gilder (1877-1953) was an American editor and author. He was editor of Criterion and Credit Monthly and wrote on various subjects. The best known of his literary works is The Battery New York, a History (1935). He was also the archivist of Century Associates. Collection consists of notes and sources for Gilder's writings, papers relating to the history and business operations of the Century Company between 1913 and 1914, and some personal papers. Materials for Gilder's writings include correspondence, typescripts of articles, and research notes for biographies of Don Marquis and Joan of Arc. Edward Hugh Sothern (1859-1933) was an American actor and author who appeared on the New York and London stages; Julia Marlowe (1865-1950) was a successful actress in New York. They became co-stars in 1904, were married in 1911, and toured, mainly in Shakespeare plays, until her final retirement in 1924. Sothern devoted much of his later years to public readings, lectures and writing. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, theatre materials, financial and legal papers, and photographs. Correspondence, ca. 1860-1950, is between Sothern and Marlowe and with colleagues, family and friends; other correspondence concerns business and legal matters. St. Clair McElway (1845-1915) was the editor of the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper from 1884 until 1915. In addition to his newspaper work, he gave numerous addresses and speeches and was a member of the New York Board of Regents from 1883 to 1915 (he became Chancellor in 1913). Collection consists of correspondence, writings, memorabilia and personal documents, photographs, and printed matter of McKelway and others. Correspondence, 1872-1948, is mainly concerned with educational matters, with some editorial correspondence and personal letters written by McElway and members of his family. Most of the writings, 1881-1915, are originals and copies of McElway's addresses and speeches which deal with public affairs, educational issues and matters pertaining to Brooklyn. Other writings include editorials for the Brooklyn Eagle, book reviews and obituaries. Samuel Thompson (1738-1811) was a farmer and physician of Setauket, Long Island, New York. Collection consists of Thompson's diaries with transcripts and some family papers. Diaries, 1800-1808, chronicle events in the life of Thompson's family and neighbors in Brookhaven Township and Suffolk County. Family papers, 1710-1858, include wills, bills of sale for slaves and indentures for servants, land deeds, estate inventories, and letters. Albert Sonnichsen (1878-1931) was a writer, adventurer, and naval seaman who participated in some of the most significant events of his era, both locally and internationally. The Albert Sonnichsen papers primarily consist of papers, relating to his experiences in Macedonia, 1906-1907, and the Philippines, 1899-1903, including correspondence, photographs and original diaries. Also found in the collection are Albert's father Nicolai (Nicholas) Sonnichsen's consular documents, a personal narrative relating to his capture and imprisonment by the Union Army during the Civil War, and a diary by D.A. Francis Smith Belton (ca. 1791-1861) was a career officer in the U.S. Army who served in the Mexican War. He was married to Harriet Kirby Belton (1798-1873); their son Winfield Scott Belton (1820-1889) fought with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Collection consists of the papers of Francis Smith Belton, Harriet Kirby Belton, Winfield Scott Belton, and members of the Dawson, Kirby and Todd families who were related to the Beltons. Papers of Francis Smith Belton, 1818-1853, include correspondence with his wife, military papers (some are copies) and an autobiography. Papers of Harriet Kirby Belton, 1829-1854, consist mainly of correspondence with her husband during the period of the Mexican War. Winfield Scott Belton's papers, 1832-1887, include correspondence with his wife relating in part to his activities during the Civil War. Kirby family papers consist of correspondence of various family members. Dawson papers, ca. 1763-1813, include correspondence of Joshua Dawson who emigrated to the U.S. from Ireland. Todd family papers, 1819-1861, contain correspondence concerning naval service and political and military events during the Mexican War. He served on the New York State Racing Commission and was a member of the New York State World's Fair Commission from 1936 to 1941. Charles Hanson Towne (1877-1949) was an author, editor and popular New York celebrity. From 1924 to 1929 he edited many magazines including Smart Set, Delineator, Designer, McClure's, and Harper's Bazaar. He also wrote poetry, novels, plays, travel essays, song cycles, lyrics for musicals and operettas, memoirs, and newspaper columns; taught poetry at Columbia University; and toured with the Broadway hit, Life With Father. Much of his writing celebrated New York City and he was considered to be the quintessential New Yorker. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, financial papers, press clippings, photographs, and ephemera. Correspondence, 1924-1948, contains letters from Towne's friends and fans, many of them prominent in literature and the arts; occasional copies of his replies; and his outgoing letters, 1918-1931.
