Regina Kellerman (1923-2009) was an architectural historian who served as an early director of research for the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission, and later become the founder and first director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation. Her pioneering research, both in New York and the Netherlands, led to her correctly identifying the location of New York City's first City Hall, a conclusion borne out by the subsequent excavation of the site during the early 1970s. The collection covers Kellerman's career as an architectural historian and preservationist and includes correspondence, reports and notes, architectural drawings and plans, and photographs and slides which she generated and gathered in the course of her investigation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods located in New York City and the surrounding area. less

Nicholas N. Martinovich (1883-1954) was a Russian-born authority on Ottoman and Turkish art. He served in the Russian diplomatic service in the Near East and taught Oriental languages at the University of Petrograd. In 1922 he emigrated to the U.S. where he prepared descriptions of manuscripts and art objects for various museums. He wrote books and articles, lectured and taught courses at Columbia University in New York City. Collection consists of biographical sketch; corrrespondence, 1935-1951; and manuscripts of Martinovich's monographs "Battal and Danishmend" (a Turkish legendary work) and on Mihri Khatun, a Turkish poetess of the 15th century. Also, a transcription of an unidentified Persian manuscript and a collection of slides and photocopies of Oriental manuscripts. less

Citizens for a Quieter City was a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to the reduction of urban noise. Founded by Robert Alex Baron, its objectives were to develop information about the injurious effect of noise; research methods of controlling and reducing it; and educate the public on the importance of its abatement. The Citizens for a Quieter City records (1950-1980) document the work of the organization through correspondence with government and private sector officials; sound and video recordings; meeting minutes; records of noise complaints; scrapbooks; financial records; posters; and published research and information on noise pollution. The collection also holds the records of the Upper Sixth Avenue Noise Abatement Association and Robert Alex Baron's files regarding his job as general manager of Theatre Tours. less

The Century Foundation, established in 1906 as the Cooperative League and renamed the Twentieth Century Fund in 1922, is a non-profit research institution that supports the study of political and economic issues in the United States. Since its inception, the organization has funded research projects—primarily books and reports, but also pamphlets, papers, committees, task forces, conferences, seminars, and educational films—with the aim of influencing and improving public policy. The Century Foundation records, dating from 1906 to 2010, contain correspondence, reports, minutes, memorandum, manuscripts, and publications that document the work of trustees, staff, and funded project directors. The records provide extensive documentation of projects conceived of, funded by, and associated with the organization, the bulk of which date from 1960 to the mid-1990s. These projects, and the development of the foundation's areas of study, track the evolving focus of progressive political thought and economic policy in the 20th century United States. less

Karla Jay is a lesbian feminist activist, author, and former professor of English at Pace University (New York). The collection contains correspondence, typescripts, and other items chiefly documenting Jay's work as a professor of English and as author and coeditor of books on the experiences of lesbians and gay men. The bulk of the collection pertains to her work as a writer and academic and includes some documentation of her activities as a pioneer feminist and lesbian activist with the consciousness raising group Redstockings and the Gay Liberation Front. The correspondence includes letters from many prominent writers and gay and lesbian rights activists, her literary agent, publishers, contributors to her anthologies, and alternative presses, as well as with academic and professional organizations. The collection also includes typescript drafts of the text of The Gay Report (which she co-authored with Allen Young) and the questionnaires returned by lesbian respondents; drafts of Jay's dissertation and other writings; slides; and audio recordings, chiefly of interviews with Jay or conducted by her from the 1970s to the 1990s. Interviewees include Rita Mae Brown, Andrea Dworkin, Jeanette Foster, Barbara Grier, Jill Johnston, and Anaïs Nin. less

The John Rothman papers (1964-1990) consist of memoranda and reports documenting Rothman's leadership role in the development of The New York Times Information Bank and other information technologies. Randall B. Smith (1916-1989) was a veteran of the International Brigades who fought in the Spanish Civil War, and an active member of the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Collection consists of materials relating to the Spanish Civil War and the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Seventy-three audiotapes (ca. 1975-1985), include interviews with veterans, radio programs, conferences and classes and document experiences of Americans and Canadians in the Spanish Civil War. They provide information on the involvement of veterans in a number of organizations and movements, including the U.S. Office of Strategic Services, the Communist Party, the Vietnam anti-war movement, and protests against U.S. policies in Central America. Collection also includes lists of veterans, printed matter and photographs and slides of Spanish Civil War posters, and two original posters. less
