Laura Sweetster (Forbes) Mayo (1856 - 1941) pursued genealogical research into the Forbes family at the behest of her mother, Laura (Sweetster) Forbes (1825 - 1905). Laura, along with her brother John Elias Forbes (1859 - 1929) compiled the majority of the research, although all six of of the Forbes children were involved to some extent. Her research took her to Aberdeen, Scotland in 1849 in search of her ancestor, Captain James Forbes, and of information about the Culloden family line Family papers contain photographs and personal correspondence of the Forbes family, including five lithograph letters relating to the commodities trade in Liverpool, England, in the late 1820s. Genealogical research contains extensive correspondence between Laura Sweetster Forbes Mayo and John Goodwin, whose wife was a member of the Forbes family; correspondence between Laura and her brother Jonathan; research notes; data sheets containing vital statistics of family members; and one pamphlet relating to the Thomas Sill and Clarissa Treadway family
