James B. Butler (d. 1927) was an American lawyer and government official. He served as chief of the Appointment Division of the Treasury Department from 1881 to 1884, working under Treasury Secretary Charles J. Folger. Butler was campaign manager for Folger's 1882 New York gubernatorial race and for Chester A. Arthur's 1884 presidential campaign. Collection contains correspondence, reports, clippings, and campaign materials. Bulk of collection consists of Butler's incoming mail at the Treasury Department and his responses which detail the operation of the "spoils system" and administration of Treasury Department personnel. Also, correspondence from Folger and other New York State Republican leaders with Butler concerning his management of Folger's unsuccessful 1882 gubernatorial campaign in New York. less

Abraham Gilbert Mills (1844-1929) was a New Yorker who worked as Chief Clerk for the Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury Dept. and then entered the elevator business where he became a vice-president of the Otis Elevator Company. Mills, who was interested in amateur and professional sports, served as president of the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs from 1882 to 1884, was a supporter of the American Olympic movement, and was a member and officer of the New York Athletic Club. Having served in the Civil War, he became active in veterans organizations, particularly the Grand Army of the Republic. Collection consists of correspondence, diaries, artifacts, and printed matter documenting most aspects of Mills's life. Bulk of collection is personal and business correspondence, 1874-1929. There are two diaries, 1871-1872 and 1885, as well as letters, documents and clippings relating to the N.Y. Athletic Club, the Otis Elevator Co., baseball, the Adirondack League Club, and the Grand Army of the Republic. Nicholas Kelley was a New York City lawyer and civic leader. He served as an assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of the Treasury from 1918 to 1921 and later specialized in arbitration and labor law. Kelley was vice president of the Chrysler Corporation from 1937 to 1957 and served on the boards of such civic and social reform organizations as the National Consumers' League and the Visiting Nurse Service. The collection consists of professional and family correspondence, personal documents and ephemera related to Kelley's education at Harvard, his career as a lawyer in New York City, as assistant secretary in the Treasury Department, and his involvement with legal and civic reform organizations. less
