Phelps, Dodge & Co. was founded by Anson G. Phelps in 1834 as the successor to the firm of Phelps and Peck of New York City, the leading importer of metals in the U.S. The company imported metals, mainly tin, from Great Britain and distributed them throughout the U.S., and exported cotton to England. In addition to the metal trade, Phelps & Dodge invested in the lumber industry, brass, copper and iron manufacturing, iron mining, railroads, real estate, and banking. In 1883 the firm purchased copper mines in Arizona and was transformed into one of the nation's foremost mining companies, dealing in the mining, smelting, refining, and manufacturing of copper. In 1917 the assets of the firm were acquired by Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. and the name was changed to Phelps Dodge Corporation. Collection consists of incoming correspondence, financial and legal documents of Phelps and Peck, 1818-1834, and its successor Phelps, Dodge & Co., 1834-1869. Letters are from commission agents, customers, suppliers, and those concerned with the firm's manufacturing, lumber, real estate, railroad, and banking interests. In addition, there are letters from Daniel James of Phelps, James & Co., the firm's branch in Liverpool, England, discussing the British side of the business; letters pertaining to the estate of Anson G. Phelps; and some family correspondence. Financial and legal records include accounts of sales of Phelps, Dodge & Co. goods, invoices, receipts, 1818-1865; copies of partnership agreements, 1834-1882; the will of Anson G. Phelps; and account books, bank books and memoranda books, 1831-1864. less

Richard Pollard (1829-1908) was an insurance agent in Lynchburg, Virginia, and a trader during the 1850s in the Chinese import/export business. He served in the Confederate Army during the U.S. Civil War and was active in the Court St. Methodist Episcopal Church in Lynchburg after the war. In 1908 his daughter, Bettie Pollard Glass, founded the Pollard and Glass insurance agency in Lynchburg with Anna L. Jones. Collection consists of Pollard's business papers and correspondence and other papers of his family and related families in Lynchburg. Business papers, 1840s-1909, include correspondence, documents relating to Pollard's insurance career, notes and accounts concerning the China trade, and diaries describing his church activities and spiritual development. Family correspondence, 1840s-1917, is chiefly that of Richard Pollard and members of his immediate and extended family and includes letters from family members serving in the Confederate Army. Also, essays and diaries by family members, photographs, clippings and other printed matter. Diaries include account of naval cruise to Europe during 1866-1867 kept by one of the officers (relation to Pollard family not known). less

Gordon Lester Ford (1823-1891) was a businessman, lawyer and collector of Americana. He practiced law for much of his life but his main interests were business and real estate investment. He was president of the New London, Willimantic & Palmer Railroad from 1852 to 1856 and director or investor in several other railroads. He also served as U.S. Marshall in southern New York, collector of internal revenue for the third collection district, commissioner of deeds, and business manager of the New York Tribune. In 1863 he helped to found the Brooklyn Daily Union, a newspaper devoted to supporting the Union cause during the Civil War. He also was a founder of the Brooklyn Academy of Music and of the Brooklyn Art Association. He collected books and manuscripts and assembled what was regarded as one of the largest private collections of Americana. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, legal and business papers and account books. General correspondence, 1842-1893, which includes in-coming letters and drafts and letterbooks of out-going letters, reflects Ford's activities as a lawyer and businessman, his real estate and railroad investments, his government service, and his autograph collecting. Family correspondence, 1830-1910, contains Ford's correspondence with his parents, wife (Emily Ellsworth Ford), brothers and sisters, children, and various members of his mother's family, the Burnhams. Legal papers, 1837-1893, include case records, letterbook, law diaries, and law ledgers. Business papers, 1839-1891, include insurance papers, accounts, bills and receipts, promissory notes, and indentures. Account books, 1844-1892, consist of ledgers reflecting Ford's legal and business transactions and accounts with various people including family members. There are also papers, 1863-1871, concerning his internal revenue position and the Brooklyn Daily Union, in addition to miscellaneous papers which include membership certificates, invitations, calling cards, and printed ephemera. less

Abraham Gilbert Mills (1844-1929) was a New Yorker who worked as Chief Clerk for the Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury Dept. and then entered the elevator business where he became a vice-president of the Otis Elevator Company. Mills, who was interested in amateur and professional sports, served as president of the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs from 1882 to 1884, was a supporter of the American Olympic movement, and was a member and officer of the New York Athletic Club. Having served in the Civil War, he became active in veterans organizations, particularly the Grand Army of the Republic. Collection consists of correspondence, diaries, artifacts, and printed matter documenting most aspects of Mills's life. Bulk of collection is personal and business correspondence, 1874-1929. There are two diaries, 1871-1872 and 1885, as well as letters, documents and clippings relating to the N.Y. Athletic Club, the Otis Elevator Co., baseball, the Adirondack League Club, and the Grand Army of the Republic. William Parkinson Greene (1795-1864) was a businessman of Norwich, Connecticut. Collection consists of correspondence, land patents, tax receipts, quit claims, contracts of sale, and other papers relating to lands in Ottawa and Williams counties in Ohio, and Monroe, Kalamazoo and Hillsdale counties in Michigan. less

The Mercantile Collection, 1726-1950, is a synthetic collection documenting mercantile and other business activities from the early-17th to the mid-20th centuries, especially in the northeastern United States. It consists of papers and records created by persons, firms, and companies engaged chiefly in trade, finance, insurance, mining, railroad management, shipping, and whaling. A few items pertain to manufacturing and real estate. Transatlantic commerce in the colonial and early-national period, and the early railroad industry in America, are strongly represented. Notable material includes the assorted papers of New York City and Philadelphia merchants, among them members of the Pemberton family of Philadelphia; Vice-Admiralty court proceedings; and the incomplete ledger of an 18th-century New York City druggist. less
