Betty Mandeville (1910-2001) was a producer-director for The FBI in Peace and War, a radio crime drama that aired on CBS from 1944 to 1958. Mandeville worked as a producer on the show for its entire run, and was the sole producer-director beginning in 1948. The Betty Mandeville production papers contain Mandeville's scripts from the show from 1950 to 1958. Many of the scripts have handwritten revisions and annotations, as well as advertisements for broadcast. The revised scripts provide documentation of the radio production process in the 1950s. The collection includes a small number of records related to television productions with which Mandeville was involved. less

The Doris Frankel papers (1922-1993) document Frankel's career as a dramatist and contain scripts, synopses outlining show ideas, correspondence, personal papers, and ephemera. Gladys Malvern was an author who wrote articles and several books about the theater, including biographies of performers Joseph Jefferson, Katharine Cornell, and Harry Lauder, as well as dancer Anna Pavlova. The majority of the Gladys Malvern papers consists of an undated and untitled 87-page typescript on the history of world theater, from the Greeks and the Elizabethans to the modern era. The typescript, which is heavily emended, appears not to have been published. Internal evidence suggests that it was written in 1945. Also in the collection is a 12-page typescript of an article about actress Helen Hayes, written during the spring of 1944 and submitted to AMERICAN GIRL magazine. Malvern corresponded with Hayes' secretary prior to writing the piece, and that correspondence is included. Also present are four 2-page pieces apparently written for a radio series which featured celebrated New York restauranteur George Rector, in which Rector reminisces about famous theater people he has known such as Sarah Bernhardt and Eddie Foy. It is unclear whether the pieces were ever broadcast. Three letters written to Malvern during 1957 are also included, and concern her conversion to the Christian Science faith. less

The Leopold Badia papers consist of a variety of materials reflecting a long acting career, including contracts, salary stubs, portions of scripts, sheet music, some correspondence, and a complete radio script from 1945. Contracts for stock productions make up the bulk of Leopold Badia's papers, but there are also several "sides" representing his character's lines from plays, including SPEAK EASY and THE GENTLEMAN FROM ATHENS, and brief notes from colleagues such as José Ferrar, Fredric March, and Sam Levene. The radio script is from a series called ONE MAN'S DESTINY, celebrating the lives of prominent people. This episode is devoted to New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia. less

Henry J. Taylor was an economist, journalist, columnist, author, and ambassador. Born in Chicago in 1902, later a resident of Virginia, Henry J. Taylor began his career as a journalist and columnist. His articles describing his world travels during the two decades between the First and Second World Wars were collected in his first book, TIME RUNS OUT (1942). Mr. Taylor's other books included MEN IN MOTION (1943), MEN AND POWER (1946), AN AMERICAN SPEAKS HIS MIND (1957), a novel, THE BIG MAN (1964), and another collection of essays, MEN AND MOMENTS (1966). Mr. Taylor was U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland, 1957-60, during Pres. Eisenhower's second term. Henry J. Taylor died in 1984. Consists of thirty radio talks by Henry J. Taylor, from his weekly program YOUR LAND AND MINE, from the period May 9, 1949 to March 20, 1950. The scripts are numbered #333 to 377, but lack nos. 334, 340-4, 348-9, 351-2, 364, 374-6. The program was sponsored by General Motors, and that organization is frequently mentioned in talks on economic themes, such as taxation. Other prominent topics include Communist subversion of the U.S. government, the concurrent Alger Hiss case, and international affairs, especially concerning the Soviet Union, China, and Europe. less

The Ilka Chase Papers consist of correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, scripts, scrapbooks and other material related to the career of Ilka Chase. There is also considerable material related to the career of her mother, Edna Woolman Chase, and to "Vogue" magazine. There is a large amount of personal correspondence, especially between Ilka Chase and her mother. The collection also contains the entire run of scripts from a radio program hosted by Ilka Chase from January 1951 to October 1951 and a complete run of articles for a syndicated newspaper column from 1955 to 1964. The bulk of the collection is radio scripts for The Theatre Guild on the Air, presented by United States Steel Corporation, and The Cavalcade of America, presented by the Du Pont Company. There is also a script for a Columbia University bicentennial radio program, titled "Socrates." There are multiple versions of some of the radio scripts, including "The Philadelphia Story" and "Strange Interlude." William J. Kaland (1915-1983) was a writer and producer of programs for radio and television, mostly for the Westinghouse Broadcasting Company where he was an executive producer. He created a number of public affairs and history programs including The Great Ones (1967) and a series on the problems of transportation and communication which won the George Foster Peabody Award in 1973. The collection consists of press material (including photographs), scripts, memoranda, correspondence, and notes concerning projects on which he worked; and jingle lyrics. It also includes biographical material on Kaland, some of his writings, and two video recordings. less
