The Richard Sutton genealogical research papers contain family papers dating from 1801 to 1886, and Sutton's research notes, copies of documents, and correspondence generated by his research on the Sutton and Steele families. The family documents are largely papers of members of the Steele family of New York City, in particular Sutton's great-grandfather, William Steele. The Bedford Baptist Church was established in 1787 in Westchester County, New York. The records are comprised of three ledgers: minutes of church meetings and membership rolls dating from 1797-1862; minutes of church meetings dating from 1862-1919; and a statistical record book dating from 1867 to 1920 less

Mary Van Nostrand was a daughter of John Van Nostrand and Helena Lefferts. Both the Van Nostrands and Lefferts were prominent families in Brooklyn and Long Island with roots dating back to the 17th century Dutch settlements. Elizabeth Stuart Smyth (1780-1818) was the daughter of Captain John Ferdinand Stuart Smyth, a Loyalist who returned to England before her birth, and whom she did not meet until his return to American during her adolescence. Mary Van Nostrand married Walter Titus in 1801; Elizabeth Smyth married Gideon Nichols in 1802. The collection is comprised of letters written by Mary Van Nostrand (1782-1818) to her cousin Elizabeth Smyth (1780-1858) beginning in adolescence and ending with Mary's death. The Stokes Family Genealogical Research Papers consist of genealogical research materials compiled and collected by Anson Phelps Stokes, author of the Stokes Records (1910), and his daughter, Helen Phelps Stokes on the Phelps and Stokes families, who were primarily bankers and merchants in New England and New York in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Materials in the collection include correspondence, manuscripts of genealogical works, family trees, genealogical pamphlets, notes, numerous copies and a small number of original family documents. Highlights include correspondence (1843-1847) of Anson Greene Phelps and his daughters, Caroline Phelps Stokes and Elizabeth Phelps James and an 1867 safe conduct for James Stokes signed by William H. Round Top Lutheran Church, named for the structure's round-topped roof, was established in Dutchess County in about 1746. The locality is now a hamlet called Bethel in the the town of Pine Plains. The church was established after the break up of a Moravian Indian Mission called Shekomeko, which was located on farm land owned by Edward Huntting The church records include births, baptisms, and lists of communicants mainly from 1760 to 1787, but with some additional entries, possibly unrelated to Round Top, recording vital statistics from the early 19th Century. The collection was transcribed in 1921 by Walter Kenneth Griffin. The transcription has been microfilmed and is available in the Milstein Division less

Rufus King (1838-1924) was a banker by profession as well as a respected genealogist. The son of Rufus Sylvester and Phoebe Odell King, his New England ancestors included the revolutionary war veteran and New York State Senator Rufus King, after whom he was named. The Rufus King genealogical research papers consist primarily of the notes and correspondence generated and collected by King in the course of tracing his family's lineage, as well as an assortment of family papers dating from 1720 to 1866. less

William Salmon (1684-1759) of Southold, Long Island, was a grandson of William Salmon (b. 1610) who emigrated from England to Southold in 1635. The collection includes the original manuscript (1 v.) known and published as the Salmon Records, a private register of marriages and deaths, 1696-1815, of residents and persons associated with the town of Southold, Suffolk County, New York, as well as a separate manuscript index (1 v.) compiled by Joseph H. Petty in 1860. The register was started by William Salmon (1684-1759) of Southold, and continued by members of the Salmon family. The volume contains what appear to be two separate registers, later bound together and re-paginated in red ink as one. The first, a register of deaths with a few marriages, spans 1696-1815; the second, of marriages, spans [1702]-1811. The manuscript index compiled by Joseph H. Petty in 1860 conforms to the re-pagination. less

The Smith family of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, N.Y. is descended from John "Rock" Smith, fl. 1665. Smith family documents, 1736-1942, consist primarily of deeds and other contracts concerning the Smith family of Brookhaven, N.Y. The collection includes indentures for land transactions, records of road surveys, wills, articles of agreement for employment, tenant leases, subpoenas, land search records, specifications for building a house, mortgages, accounts, receipts for payment of back taxes and a small amount of correspondence. Also present are inventories of household items, farm implements, and livestock in the possession of Joshua and Lucy Smith at the time of his death in 1811, and of their son Richard Wallace Smith's household items at the time of his death in 1868, as well as a photocopy of a Smith family tree. less

Standish Backus (1875-1943) was a corporate lawyer and president of the Burroughs Adding Machine Company from 1920 to 1943. The collection is composed of correspondence concerning his genealogical research on the Standish, Backus, and related families as well as the data and family documents he assembled including letters, deeds, printed ephemera, photograph albums, ancestral charts, and family crests. Papers consist of two volumes of collected original deeds, indentures, leases, wills, and miscellaneous correspondence of the Scudder family of Huntington, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, and a family journal and scrapbook in one volume. Volume 3 contains correspondence with Marvyn Scudder and others concerning the death in action of Jack Scudder in France during World War I. Volume 4, Marvyn Scudder scrapbook, is a journal and scrapbook with entries by members of several generations of the family of Moses L. Scudder (1843-1917), railroad president and financier of Halesite, Huntington, recording family matters and social activities, with particular reference to the upbringing of Marvyn and Philip Johnston ("Jack") Scudder. The volume, including numerous photographs of family members and their activities, also served as a guestbook for friends and family visiting the estate. less

The Provoost (Provost) family, of French Huguenot descent, were early settlers of New Amsterdam. David Provoost (1670-1724) was a merchant and Mayor of the City of New York from 1699 to 1700. His nephew John Provoost (d. 1767) was the son of Samuel Provoost and Mary Spratt Provoost Alexander, prominent New York City merchants, and the stepson of James Alexander, a prominent New York lawyer and politician. The Provoost family papers include a manuscript copy of David Provoost's genealogy of the Provoost family of New Amsterdam (compiled 1724), made by John Provoost in 1742, as well as two letters from John Provoost at Curacao to his parents dated 18 May 1736 and 21 June 1736, concerning shipment and prices of goods, addressed to his stepfather, James Alexander, in New York. Also present are some genealogical notes dated 1785, and a letter from Lucy D. Akerly to a Mr. King, 6 Oct. 1897, loosely laid in, concerning the Provoost family. less

Frederick Innes Allen (1859-1938) of Auburn, New York was an attorney who served as Commissioner of Patents during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. His wife, Cornelia Margaret Seward, was the granddaughter of William H. Seward. Frederick I.Allen's research into the history of the Allen family includes correspondence, genealogical notes, clippings, photographs, printed material, and family charts. Original family documents in the collection dated 1706-1838 consist chiefly of correspondence, land records, and wills of Daniel Allen of Greenfield, Saratoga County, New York and Adams, Massachusetts. Also present is a notebook containing poetry, spelling or handwriting exercises, recipes, and miscellaneous notes. Additional research notes in the collection relate to the genealogies of the Palmer and other allied families. less

The Becker family papers consist of two scrapbooks containing papers of the Becker and related families from Saratoga, Rensselaerwyck, Albany, and elsewhere in New York State. The papers include accounts, receipts, bills and agreements, indentures, wills, other legal documents, and correspondence. Notable items include a 1753 legal document between Johannes Douw, Albertus Becker, and Storm Van Der Zee concerning their joint ownership of a mill on Norman's Kill, Volckert B. Douw's 1764 tavern license, and a letter from Cornelius Cuyler to Simon de Ridder dated 1747 asking him to grind a dozen bushels. less

R. Burnham Moffat (1861-1916) was a New York City attorney and the author of several genealogical works. The Barclay, Clarkson, Moffat, and Pierrepont genealogical research papers consist chiefly of the correspondence and research files of R. Burnham Moffat created in the course of his research on the Barclay, Clarkson, Moffatt, and Pierrepont families. The collection also contains additional letters and research notes of John J. Pierrepont, Henry E. Pierrepont, and numerous clippings, particularly of family obituaries, 1791-1939. Original family materials include an early copy of a 1765 Clarkson family will, a "pocket piece" embroidered by Elizabeth Clarkson for her grandson, an 1860 letter to William Clarkson concerning family possessions in Amsterdam, and a campaign card from Abbot Low Moffat's 1929 campaign for the New York State Assembly, 15th District. less

Edward Braman (1833-1907) of Hyde Park, N.Y. was a genealogist and local historian. The Braman family genealogical research papers consist of genealogical notes, compiled by Edward Braman, on the Braman family of Hyde Park, N.Y., New London County, Conn., and elsewhere, and the related Adams, Teel, Hitt, Dusenbury, Weaver, Garrison, Russell, Sexton, Van Vliet, and other families, as well as original family documents and manuscripts. The notes, dating 1853-1906, are mostly in bound volumes, organized by family name. Original papers include Cyrus Braman's manuscript singing book of hymn and psalm tunes, 1782-1783; a notice to him from the City of Norwich, with instructions for nightwatch duty, 1797; registers of sermons, 1826-1829; Samuel Braman's commissions as sergeant in the New York State Militia, 1825, and as Captain in the 84th Regiment, Infantry, 1830; an account book, 1840-1845, belonging to William Steele, the son in law of Braman's great-great-grandfather, who transacted business with John Jacob Astor; and assorted deeds, financial records, and notices. less

Charles P. Staubach (1870-1966) worked as a sales executive for the Burroughs Corporation, served as an officer in the 8th Infantry Regiment, New York National Guard, and was the first president of the Century Road Club Association. The Charles P. Staubach family history notebooks, compiled by Staubach from 1933-1955 and continued by his sons, 1966-1977, concern the history of his and his wife's families across multiple generations. The collection contains genealogical and biographical information on his parents, Baldwin Staubach and Elise Schwab, his wife Edith Arnold's parents, George Arnold and Frances Dubois, and numerous allied families. The notebooks also contain Staubach's memoir of his life and career, and serve as a scrapbook of family records including birth and death certificates, correspondence, pedigrees, photographs, clippings, maps, ephemera, and research notes. less

Items of note include John Hasbrouck's undated school exercise book; a list dating from 1777 of the losses sustained by Elias Hasbrouck "in the burning of Esopus," and a 1764 letter from Henry Remsen to Elias Hasbrouck, discussing the new act passed in Parliament preventing trade with non- English islands. less

Henry Cruger was born in New York in 1739 and educated at Kings College (now Columbia University). He became active in his family's mercantile business in Bristol, England, and gained prominence both in New York and England. In 1765, he was elected to the Bristol Common Council, a position he held until 1790. He served as Sheriff of Bristol from 1766 to 1767, and was elected to Parliament as a radical Whig in 1774. His outspoken support for American independence led to his defeat in the election of 1780, but did not end his political career; he went on to become mayor of Bristol in 1781, and was reelected to Parliament in 1784. He returned to New York in 1790, serving a single term in the state senate as a representative of the Federalist party, and died there in 1827 The handwritten account book details transactions of Henry Cruger & Company between 1784-1793 less

John Dean Fish (1846-1935) was a genealogist and contributor to the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. The John Dean Fish papers consist of his genealogical correspondence and research materials, including family records, charts, notes and writings, and research files, pertaining to the Fish family of England in America. Although his published work, The Fish Family of Great Bowden in Leicestershire, England, traces the family's roots back for centuries in England, the bulk of the material in this collection pertains to a projected later work on the members of the family after their emigration to America in the eighteenth century. His research for The Fish Family in America included many branches of the Fish family throughout the United States, the majority of which settled in New York and New England. Among the prominent members of the family were Hamilton Fish (1808-1893), a politician who served as Governor of New York and Secretary of State under President Grant, and his son, Stuyvesant Fish (1851-1923), president of the Illinois Central Railroad. The collection, the bulk of which reflects his research activities from the 1890s through the 1920s, contains his correspondence with, and documents collected from, various individuals, government agencies, and historical societies, as well as files he compiled on individual family members and the towns in which they lived.
