The Stokes Family Genealogical Research Papers consist of genealogical research materials compiled and collected by Anson Phelps Stokes, author of the Stokes Records (1910), and his daughter, Helen Phelps Stokes on the Phelps and Stokes families, who were primarily bankers and merchants in New England and New York in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Materials in the collection include correspondence, manuscripts of genealogical works, family trees, genealogical pamphlets, notes, numerous copies and a small number of original family documents. Highlights include correspondence (1843-1847) of Anson Greene Phelps and his daughters, Caroline Phelps Stokes and Elizabeth Phelps James and an 1867 safe conduct for James Stokes signed by William H. Rufus King (1838-1924) was a banker by profession as well as a respected genealogist. The son of Rufus Sylvester and Phoebe Odell King, his New England ancestors included the revolutionary war veteran and New York State Senator Rufus King, after whom he was named. The Rufus King genealogical research papers consist primarily of the notes and correspondence generated and collected by King in the course of tracing his family's lineage, as well as an assortment of family papers dating from 1720 to 1866. less

William Salmon (1684-1759) of Southold, Long Island, was a grandson of William Salmon (b. 1610) who emigrated from England to Southold in 1635. The collection includes the original manuscript (1 v.) known and published as the Salmon Records, a private register of marriages and deaths, 1696-1815, of residents and persons associated with the town of Southold, Suffolk County, New York, as well as a separate manuscript index (1 v.) compiled by Joseph H. Petty in 1860. The register was started by William Salmon (1684-1759) of Southold, and continued by members of the Salmon family. The volume contains what appear to be two separate registers, later bound together and re-paginated in red ink as one. The first, a register of deaths with a few marriages, spans 1696-1815; the second, of marriages, spans [1702]-1811. The manuscript index compiled by Joseph H. Petty in 1860 conforms to the re-pagination. less

The Smith family of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, N.Y. is descended from John "Rock" Smith, fl. 1665. Smith family documents, 1736-1942, consist primarily of deeds and other contracts concerning the Smith family of Brookhaven, N.Y. The collection includes indentures for land transactions, records of road surveys, wills, articles of agreement for employment, tenant leases, subpoenas, land search records, specifications for building a house, mortgages, accounts, receipts for payment of back taxes and a small amount of correspondence. Also present are inventories of household items, farm implements, and livestock in the possession of Joshua and Lucy Smith at the time of his death in 1811, and of their son Richard Wallace Smith's household items at the time of his death in 1868, as well as a photocopy of a Smith family tree. less

The Sands family of Block Island, Rhode Island, trace their lineage to James Sands, born in 1622 in Staffordshire, England. The collection consists of a genealogical research and personal papers relating to the Sands family. Personal papers include wills, deeds, indentures, and other documents dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. Genealogical research materials comprise one volume of photographs and other images depicting descendants of James Sands of Block Island, as well as notes on the Walker, Hutchinson, Ray, Guthrie, Palgrave, Cornell, Ayscough, Middagh, Holt, and Hershaw families; one volume of genealogies compiled by Malcolm Sands Wilson; and a small quantity of research notes and correspondence less

Papers consist of two volumes of collected original deeds, indentures, leases, wills, and miscellaneous correspondence of the Scudder family of Huntington, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, and a family journal and scrapbook in one volume. Volume 3 contains correspondence with Marvyn Scudder and others concerning the death in action of Jack Scudder in France during World War I. Volume 4, Marvyn Scudder scrapbook, is a journal and scrapbook with entries by members of several generations of the family of Moses L. Scudder (1843-1917), railroad president and financier of Halesite, Huntington, recording family matters and social activities, with particular reference to the upbringing of Marvyn and Philip Johnston ("Jack") Scudder. The volume, including numerous photographs of family members and their activities, also served as a guestbook for friends and family visiting the estate. less

The Hasbrouck family papers include original documents and copies of documents relating to the Hasbrouck family of New Paltz, New York, 1730-1858. The bulk of the papers are comprised of legal documents such as indentures, wills, and financial documents including property lists, account books, and receipts. The papers belong predominantly to John Hasbrouck; Elias Hasbrouck (1741-1791), a merchant from Woodstock, Ulster County, NY; and Richard M. Hasbrouck. Other family members represented in the collection include Susannah Hasbrouck, Abraham Hasbrouck, Elizabeth Hasbrouck, Phoebe Nordstrom, and William Conklin. Items of note include John Hasbrouck's undated school exercise book; a list dating from 1777 of the losses sustained by Elias Hasbrouck "in the burning of Esopus," and a 1764 letter from Henry Remsen to Elias Hasbrouck, discussing the new act passed in Parliament preventing trade with non- English islands. less

Franklin Marion Gentry, scientist and author of Manhasset, Long Island, New York, was born on March 10, 1898 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He married Violet Dewey Young on August 6, 1925 in Lexington, Kentucky. She was born on June 24, 1900 in Lexington. They had one daughter, Courtenay Dewey Gentry, born on January 18, 1931 in New York City. Franklin M. Gentry was the son of Franklin Marion Gentry I (1853-1904) of Kentucky and Helen Norton Harrison (1864-1933) of Georgia. Gentry I and Harrison were married on June 30, 1897 in New Orleans. The Gentry family in America began with Nicholas Gentry I and his brother Samuel who came to Virginia as British soldiers around 1677. The Gentry Collection is primarily research correspondence and notes of Franklin Marion Gentry who was compiling genealogical information on all lines of his and his wife, Violet Dewey Young's, families in order to secure memberships in the Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Daughters of the American Revolution for his wife and daughter. Some of the research was conducted by Lillie Baker Young (Mrs. Samuel Arthur), mother of Violet. The bulk of this material is from the early 1950s. The collection also includes photocopied documents such as wills, military payment records, indenture records and land claims from the 18th and 19th century and even as early as 1675. These are all photocopies or transcriptions made in the 1950s for research purposes. Other papers include photocopied articles from reference books on the genealogy of specific families, lineage charts, and photocopies of coats of arms for various families. There are also a few clippings, photos, and maps, and a small amount of printed material. Other family names with more than one folder of material besides Gentry, Young, Dewey and Harrison are Adams, Allan, Brooks, Foster, Harris, Norton, Smith, Terrell and Thruston. Lucas Brodhead (1844-1914) of Versailles, Kentucky was the general manager and superintendent of Woodburn Stock Farm, a noted thoroughbred horse-breeding establishment in Woodford County, Kentucky. The Lucas Brodhead genealogical research papers, compiled by Lucas Brodhead between 1873-ca.1930s, consist of his correspondence concerning his genealogical research on the Brodhead, Breck, Upshaw, Price and other allied families, as well as original family legal documents, transcripts of wills, genealogical research, notes, membership applications for lineage societies, photographs of original family documents, and ancestral charts less

John Dean Fish (1846-1935) was a genealogist and contributor to the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. The John Dean Fish papers consist of his genealogical correspondence and research materials, including family records, charts, notes and writings, and research files, pertaining to the Fish family of England in America. Although his published work, The Fish Family of Great Bowden in Leicestershire, England, traces the family's roots back for centuries in England, the bulk of the material in this collection pertains to a projected later work on the members of the family after their emigration to America in the eighteenth century. His research for The Fish Family in America included many branches of the Fish family throughout the United States, the majority of which settled in New York and New England. Among the prominent members of the family were Hamilton Fish (1808-1893), a politician who served as Governor of New York and Secretary of State under President Grant, and his son, Stuyvesant Fish (1851-1923), president of the Illinois Central Railroad. The collection, the bulk of which reflects his research activities from the 1890s through the 1920s, contains his correspondence with, and documents collected from, various individuals, government agencies, and historical societies, as well as files he compiled on individual family members and the towns in which they lived. Also present is a manuscript of his work The Fish Family of Great Bowden in Leicestershire, England; an original 1732 record (and typed transcript) of a legal dispute which involved Martha and Moses Fish of Stonington, CT; and a copy made by Fish in 1864 of an 1811 extract from the diary of Asa Fish. less

The Richard Sutton genealogical research papers contain family papers dating from 1801 to 1886, and Sutton's research notes, copies of documents, and correspondence generated by his research on the Sutton and Steele families. The family documents are largely papers of members of the Steele family of New York City, in particular Sutton's great-grandfather, William Steele. Allied families represented in his research files include the Brown, Davison, Falconer, Ostrom, Seger, Smith, Stymets, Vaughan, Wisner, and Woodruff families, all of New York and the surrounding areas. less

Clapp family members lived in New York City, Westchester and Dutchess Counties, N.Y., and Fairfield County, Conn. The Clapp family papers include 17th and 18th century financial records, land records, and estate records of the Clapp family of New York and Connecticut. The financial records primarily consist of promissory notes, 1722-1772, many of which relate to the debts of John Clapp. Also present are Thomas Clapp's accounting records, dating mostly from 1804-1815, and additional miscellaneous receipts and accounts. Land records relate to properties owned by the Clapps in New York City, Greenwich, Conn., 1723-1769, Westchester County, N.Y., 1705-1807, and Dutchess County, N.Y., 1740-1770. A purchase deed for land in the Bowery Ward of New York City by John Clapp is the oldest land record in the collection, dating from 1694. Estate records include wills, inventories, debts, sale accounts, and lists, notably the 1737 will of James Clapp. Family members include Benjamin, Cornby, John and James Clapp. Other family names mentioned in these documents include Cornell, Birdsall, Flamen, Franklin, Gerbrantz, Mean, Quinby, Sharpas, Vail, and Hallock. less

The Becker family papers consist of two scrapbooks containing papers of the Becker and related families from Saratoga, Rensselaerwyck, Albany, and elsewhere in New York State. The papers include accounts, receipts, bills and agreements, indentures, wills, other legal documents, and correspondence. Notable items include a 1753 legal document between Johannes Douw, Albertus Becker, and Storm Van Der Zee concerning their joint ownership of a mill on Norman's Kill, Volckert B. Douw's 1764 tavern license, and a letter from Cornelius Cuyler to Simon de Ridder dated 1747 asking him to grind a dozen bushels. less

Crawford Hartman's and his wife, Helen Blanchard Hartman's genealogical research on the Blanchard family. The Warner Family genealogical research papers consist primarily of the notes and correspondence generated by Mildred Warner Nunn in the course of tracing her family's lineage, as well as an assortment of collected family papers dating from 1633 to 1920. Mildred Warner Nunn was an amateur genealogist working from 1960 to 1962 who traced her descent from the first pastor of the Dutch Collegiate Church of New Amsterdam and to William Warner, who settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1637. less

Frederick Innes Allen (1859-1938) of Auburn, New York was an attorney who served as Commissioner of Patents during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. His wife, Cornelia Margaret Seward, was the granddaughter of William H. Seward. Frederick I.Allen's research into the history of the Allen family includes correspondence, genealogical notes, clippings, photographs, printed material, and family charts. Original family documents in the collection dated 1706-1838 consist chiefly of correspondence, land records, and wills of Daniel Allen of Greenfield, Saratoga County, New York and Adams, Massachusetts. Also present is a notebook containing poetry, spelling or handwriting exercises, recipes, and miscellaneous notes. Additional research notes in the collection relate to the genealogies of the Palmer and other allied families. less

The Provoost (Provost) family, of French Huguenot descent, were early settlers of New Amsterdam. David Provoost (1670-1724) was a merchant and Mayor of the City of New York from 1699 to 1700. His nephew John Provoost (d. 1767) was the son of Samuel Provoost and Mary Spratt Provoost Alexander, prominent New York City merchants, and the stepson of James Alexander, a prominent New York lawyer and politician. The Provoost family papers include a manuscript copy of David Provoost's genealogy of the Provoost family of New Amsterdam (compiled 1724), made by John Provoost in 1742, as well as two letters from John Provoost at Curacao to his parents dated 18 May 1736 and 21 June 1736, concerning shipment and prices of goods, addressed to his stepfather, James Alexander, in New York. Also present are some genealogical notes dated 1785, and a letter from Lucy D. Akerly to a Mr. King, 6 Oct. 1897, loosely laid in, concerning the Provoost family. less
