The mercantile firm of Morris & Ludlum (active 1790s) operated a hardware store on Water Street in New York City, and also engaged in potash production in Sussex County, New Jersey. The Morris & Ludlum letter and order book, 1797-1825, contains copied letters and orders written by the hardware business at New York, 1797-1799, to merchants in Great Britain and the southern United States. These include Perry & Hayes, suppliers of a large variety of hardware, and the pewterware firm of Robert Bush & Co., both located in Bristol, England. Other commodities mentioned include iron bars, potash, flaxseed, cotton, and otter skins. The volume was later used as a ledger by James Ludlum for his farming and milling activities at Sparta, New Jersey, including transactions in his role as an administrator of his brother Gabriel Ludlum's estate. less

William Wilson (1739-1816) was a Philadelphia Quaker merchant. He was the son of George and Mary Wilson and the stepson of merchant Solomon Fussell (1704-1762), formerly a chairmaker. William Wilson's letter book at Philadelphia, 1757 June 23-1760 October 5 (1 volume in 1 folder), contains copied letters sent to merchants and ship captains trading chiefly in the West Indies and Great Britain, and along the eastern North American coast. Letters typically give instructions followed by lists of goods ordered or bills for goods shipped. Most letters are from Wilson, but a few are from merchants Solomon Fussell and Robert Parrish, or from Wilson on their behalf. Letter recipients include James Verree of South Carolina, John and Samuel Gould of Rhode Island, Tristram Coffin and Christopher Starbuck of Nantucket, ship captain Nathaniel Donnell, and British merchants William Neate and the firm of Devonshire, Reeve, & Lloyd. Commodities include flour, sugar, molasses, coffee, cotton, whale oil and bone, mackerel, indigo, rice, and iron bar, as well as clothing, hardware, and household goods. less

Oliver Wolcott (1760-1833), was United States Secretary of the Treasury, 1795-1800; United States Circuit Court judge for the Second Circuit, 1801-1802; and governor of Connecticut, 1817-1827. Wolcott also served as the state comptroller of Connecticut before joining the United States Treasury Department in 1789, and presided over the Connecticut constitutional convention in 1818. He was deeply involved in mercantile and banking affairs in New York City during his hiatus from public service. In 1803 Wolcott established the firm of Oliver Wolcott & Co., commission merchants, in partnership with James Watson, Moses Rogers, Archibald Gracie, and William W. Woolsey, in New York City. The firm dissolved in 1805, and Wolcott continued as an independent merchant, primarily in the China trade. Prior to his return to Connecticut in 1815, Oliver Wolcott was a director of the Bank of the United States, 1810-1811, and the first president of the Bank of America, 1812-1814. He was also the first president of the Merchants' Bank, 1803-1804. The letterbook of Oliver Wolcott & Co., 1803-1805, and of Oliver Wolcott, 1805-1808, contains copies of outgoing letters, some in the hand of Oliver Wolcott, documenting mercantile, real property, and other domestic and foreign commercial transactions. Letters concern the trade in fur and tea with Canton, China; importation of coffee and sugar from Batavia, Java; importation of pepper, salt petre and other commodities from Calcutta, India; exportation of tobacco to Holland and France; trade with Portugal and Barbados; prices and methods of doing business; voyages of the ships Triton and Trident; and the impact of the Napoleonic wars and the Embargo Act on American shipping and commerce. Squire Bancroft (1841-1926), English actor-manager, played hundreds of roles in a theatrical career which spanned over fifty years, and brought him into contact with most of the leading English theatrical figures of his day. Born May 14, 1861, of well-to-do means, Squire Bancroft was educated privately in England and France. He made his stage debut in 1861 at the Theatre Royal, Birmingham, toured the provinces, then made his London debut in 1865 at the Prince of Wales Theatre as Jack Crawley in A WINNING HAZARD, under the management of H. J. Byron and prominent actress Marie Wilton (1839-1921). He married Miss Wilton in 1867, and joined her in theatrical management. Over the next eighteen years, in addition to his management duties, Squire Bancroft played many leading roles in contemporary plays as well as works by Shakespeare and Sheridan. He retired from management in 1885, but continued acting until 1918; he also wrote three books, one in collaboration with his wife. Sir Squire Bancroft died on April 19, 1926, at the age of 84. Squire Bancroft's letter book consists of autograph documents (notes and brief letters) and clipped autographs, written by prominent 19th century theatrical figures, including William C. Macready, Charlotte Cushman, Lester Wallack, Junius Brutus Booth, Tommaso Salvini, Laura Keane, Sir Henry Irving, Ellen Terry, and others. Some notes are addressed to Marie Bancroft. less
