Clippings, programs, correspondence, and other papers relating to functions such as Tea with Tina, a fashion show by designer Tina Leser at the Hotel Pierre, Jan. 23, 1962, and other events concluding with The Fashion Gala '63 held at Philharmonic Hall, Jan. 6, 1963. Much of the correspondence is from and to Mrs. William Stewart ("Sue," later Susan N. Thomas) and includes copies of letters between her and Jacqueline Kennedy, in whose honor a seat was endowed by her classmates of Miss Porter's School, and who in turn endowed a seat in honor of her father. less

Accompaning the manuscript is a letter from Daniel Frohman to Joseph Jefferson's son explaining that Frohman himself gave the speech at the Actors' Fund Home at a later date. less

The J. Alfred Smith, Sr. Papers primarily document Smith's roles as author, pastor of the Allen Baptist Temple Church (ATBC) and his activities with the Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc (PNBC) as well as other church organizations. Over half of the papers document Smith's career during the 1970s and '80s as pastor of ATBC and president of the PNBC. Smith's papers include very little documentation on his career and professional activities during the 1950s and '60s, his vice presidency and presidency of the Progressive State Baptist Convention of California and Nevada headquartered in Los Angeles, or his first and second vice presidencies of the PNBC. less

Material relating to Smythe's professional interests and activities includes syllabi, bibliographies, and lecture notes pertaining to his teaching at Yamaguchi National University (Yamaguchi Daigaku) in Japan and Brooklyn College. Also included is material illustrating Smythe's extra-academic interests including United Nations affairs, Crossroads Africa, and civil rights activities. The papers of Mabel Smythe (Hugh Symthe's wife) include a scrapbook, manuscripts, and some correspondence. Of particular interest is her research material on segregation in education, which was used by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People legal staff in the 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education barring segregation in public schools. Also, manuscripts of articles and speeches, and some correspondence by W.E.B. Du Bois including "Economic Illiteracy," 1947, and "Race Relations in the U.S.," 1948. less

Gordon (born 1921) is an African-American psychologist and an expert in child development who has worked throughout his career on the issues and challenges of underprivileged and minority students in American education. The Edmund W. Gordon papers, dating from 1957 to 1990, document Gordon's career in government and academia, mostly from the mid-1960s to 1990 at Project Head Start (federal office), Columbia University Teachers College, and Yale University. The papers contain correspondence and subject files holding published and unpublished papers by Gordon and others; drafts and manuscripts of book chapters; files of the Head Start program; lectures and speeches; academic departmental correspondence; government, non-profit, and academic reports; and research-in-progress. less

Of interest is material chronicling Pickens' and the NAACP's involvement in the Scottsboro Case in Alabama. Correspondents relating to the NAACP include James Weldon Johnson, Walter Francis White, Mary White Ovington, Arthur B. Spingarn, Joel E. Spingarn, Roy Wilkins, Thurgood Marshall, and W. E. B. Du Bois. Other correspondence is between Pickens and friends, acquaintances, fellow scholars, and business associates. There is correspondence with many organizations with which Pickens was involved, such as the American Civil Liberties Union, League for Industrial Democracy, Socialist Party of America, National Council of the Young Men's and Women's Christian Association, American Committee for the Protection of the Foreign Born, and the Council for Pan American Democracy. Correspondents include Claude A. Barnett and Percival L. Prattis of the Associated Negro Press, and other individuals in government, education, and church affairs, among them John Haynes Holmes of the Community Church of New York. Writings are primarily composed of typescripts (manuscripts and editorials), speeches, and mimeographed Associated Negro Press columns and newspaper clippings of articles and editorials written by Pickens. Subjects dealt with in these different formats cover a wide range and serve to reveal Pickens' broad interests and intellectual scope. less

The papers of Walter Abel consist primarily of correspondence, contracts, speeches, and clippings documenting his work as an actor. The professional correspondence is not extensive: the bulk is single letters received from a wide variety of individuals, much of it letters of thanks. A few outgoing letters discuss proposed productions. Correspondents include John Golden, Robert Edmond Jones and Eugene Ormandy. The contracts file is incomplete. Speeches, for the most part lectures on Shakespeare, theater history, and the psychology of acting, reflect his tireless work promoting the theater to college students and others. Clippings consist of production reviews and interviews with Abel. Production materials are mostly miscellaneous single items such as call sheets and schedules from films in which Abel appeared. Organizational work consists of minutes and correspondence pertaining to his work with ANTA, the Hollywood Victory Committee and other war service organizations. The collection also contains personal material on his family, awards, and a few scrapbooks of photographs. less

The Frances Fenner and Merwyn Fenner papers contain records of the Fenners' world government activism, including copies of their speeches and articles, correspondence with other world government figures, records from their involvement in the New York Citizens' Committee for a People's World Convention, clippings, and notes. Materials range in date from 1949 to 1958. less

The collection contains correspondence, speeches, accounts, clippings, scripts and other papers reflecting the personal and professional life of Francis Wilson. Wilson carried on an active correspondence with many contemporaries prominent in the theatrical or literary field. The large series of speeches illustrates his wide-ranging interests. There is material on the plays in which he appeared, especially ERMINIE, and information on his involvement with the Players Club, but very little documenting his role as first president of the Actors' Equity Association or on the pivotal strike he led in 1919. The main political battle documented in these papers is Wilson's efforts to keep child actors out from under the jurisdiction of state labor laws. There is also some information on Wilson's family and his personal financial transactions. less

This collection contains some of Oakes's Times office files primarily from the 1970s and 1980s, and consists of internal correspondence and memoranda concerning the Editorial Department, as well as copies of speeches and a file of op-ed page articles and notes by Oakes. less

Journalist and author Tom Wicker (1926-2011) was a longtime editor and columnist for The New York Times. The Tom Wicker papers document Wicker's tenure at The Times as Washington Bureau chief (1964-1966) and as associate editor and political columnist (1966-1991). The collection consists of correspondence with both Times colleagues and readers concerning Wicker's columns and political viewpoints, internal memoranda about Times editorial decisions, letters regarding his involvement with outside institutions, and transcripts of interviews with and conducted by Wicker. less

The New York Singing Teachers' Association (NYSTA), first named the National Association of Teachers of Singing, strives to provide teachers with the tools and inspiration needed for an informed and creative pedagogy. NYSTA's Officers and Board, all of whom work on a strictly volunteer basis, meet monthly to make decisions about all aspects of NYSTA's activities--e.g. programs, courses, publications, finances, student competitions (awards and recitals), bi-annual composer's concerts, workshops (on pedagogy, voice science, etc), meetings (monthly, discussion group and luncheon or dinner group.), and membership (active and associate membership). As such, NYSTA members draw on the advances in voice science, neurology, psychology, education theory, medicine, and mind/body healing to offer new information and techniques for their pupils. less

"Negro Week" was a program on the contributions of blacks to American culture held at the New York World's Fair in July 1940, and consisted of festivals, exhibitions, song and dance recitals, choral and symphonic music, concerts, religious services, guest speakers, and a children's program. Correspondence, press releases, speeches, exhibition material, pass and address lists, and financial records, relating to the planning and presentation of "Negro Week" at the New York World's Fair, 1940. Correspondents include Geraldyn Dismond (later Geraldyn Hodges Major) and T. Arnold Hill, both officials of the program. Also speeches by W.E.B. DuBois and L. D. Reddick relating to various aspects of black contributions to American culture. less

Tompkins (1774-1825), governor of New York (1807–1817) and vice president of the United States (1817–1825), dating mostly from the period of his governorship. These consist of civil and state militia appointment certificates, 1809-1816; letters and documents concerning administrative and criminal matters, 1810-1815; a transcription of his speech to the state legislature upon re-election as governor, 1811; an undated authorization to purchase muskets as per an 1815 act; and Tompkins’ responses, 1818, to questions regarding the expenses of the Commissary of Military Stores, 1813-1817. An 1815 letter from Nathan Willliams of Utica to Tompkins concerning his rank in the state militia, and a few financial items, consisting of a voucher, check, and a letter written on his behalf to the Bank of the United States, 1820, 1824 and undated, are also present. less

The Black Consciousness Movement emerged as a political trend in South Africa in the late 1960s, in the decade after the banning of the African National Congress and the Pan Africanist Congress by the South African regime. The collection documents a primarily youth-based radical critique of the apartheid system, of the ANC's Freedom Charter and its moderate leadership in negotiating a transition to white rule in South Africa. The South Africa Black Consciousness Movement Collection consists primarily of interviews, speeches, organizational materials and printed matter documenting the politics and activities of Black Consciousness organizations in and outside of South Africa from 1983 to 1991. It comprises interviews and speeches by BCM leaders Itumeleng J. Mosala, Ishmael Mkhabela and Lybon Mabasa; interviews with black South African exiles, and anti-apartheid activists within South Africa; leaflets, declarations and factsheets of the Azanian People's Organization and the Black Consciousness Movement of Azania (BCM (A)); miscellaneous files on the New Unity Movement, the Pan Africanist Congress and other non BCM organizations; and subject files on churches, trade-unions, white organizations inside South Africa, and the State of Emergency declared by the South African government in 1985. An organization file for Indaba, a Durban-based experiment in power-sharing, and a collection of essays entitled "War Stories" by an independent American journalist, Michael Slate, are also included. less
