Michael Stewart (nee Rubin), librettist, lyricist, playwright, and novelist, was born in New York City, where he attended Queens College. He received a Master of Fine Arts in drama from Yale in 1953. Prior to his work on Broadway, Stewart wrote for television and contributed sketches and lyrics to revues. His first effort on Broadway, Bye Bye Birdie, opened in 1960 and won Stewart his first Tony as its author. During his career in the musical theater Stewart also worked on Carnival!, Hello, Dolly!, 42nd Street, George M!, Barnum, I Love My Wife, Mack and Mabel, and The Grand Tour . Among his collaborators were the writer Mark Bramble, and the composers Cy Coleman, Jerry Herman, Bob Merrill and Jule Styne. The papers are for the most part made up of drafts and scripts of Stewart's works (his major productions, as well as works that were not produced) They also include correspondence, programs, clippings, scrapbooks, appointment books, examples of Stewart's work for television and film projects, and his fiction writing. less

Ruth Chatterton (1893-1961) was an American actress, novelist, aviatrix, director and translator. Ruth Moesel was an American teacher who began collecting items on Chatterton as a hobby and later compiled information on Chatterton for a biography which was written, but never published. The Ruth Moesel collection of Ruth Chatterton materials contains scrapbooks, which document Chatterton's career with photographs, clippings, programs, as well as loose scripts, correspondence, photographs and other publicity materials. less

The Sara Greenspan Theatre Guild Files chiefly contain correspondence relating to activities of the Theatre Guild during some of its most significant years of operation. Sara Greenspan, who began as secretary with the Guild in 1925, served as the business manager of the prestigious production company for twenty years before retiring in 1963. less

Jack Gilford was a veteran vaudeville and revue comedian who played comic character roles in many stage and TV productions as well as in a number of films. Madeline Gilford was a film and stage actress and social activist, who later started a career as a producer, working with her husband Jack on many projects. Their production files, which make up the bulk of the collection, contain scripts, notes, photographs, and in the case of producing files, financial and backers materials. Other material includes scrapbooks, headshots, correspondence, Madeline Gilford's committee files, and sheet music and other material that Jack used in his vaudeville and solo acts. less

She appeared in the American Shakespeare Festival from 1966 to 1972 and was known for portraying the character of Madge in Palmolive dish soap commercials. The Jan Miner papers (1932-1993) contain clippings, programs, photographs, a scrapbook, and other papers. The collection primarily concerns her work in the theater, though there are also materials related to her work in radio, television, film, and advertisements. A scrapbook documents Miner's life and career between 1932 and 1945; the scrapbook contains clippings, photographs, and programs from performances at the Straw Hat Theatre and elsewhere. The bulk of the collection consists of production files, mostly related to theater productions, dating from 1958 to 1993. Some productions are represented only by one or two items, usually a clipping or a program, while others are represented by extensive clippings, production photographs, contracts, and other materials. Some of the better-represented productions include Dinner at Eight (San Francisco, 1993), Gertrude Stein and a Companion (1985), The Heiress (1976), The Music Keeper (1982), The Show-Off (Olney, Maryland, 1975), Watch on the Rhine (Long Wharf Theatre, 1979, and John Golden Theatre, 1980), The Women (1973), and various American Shakespeare Festival productions. The file for Gertrude Stein and a Companion includes a script. The collection contains a small file on the film Lenny (1974). The collection also contains headshots and general articles about Miner. Material related to Madge and Palmolive advertisements consist mostly of photographs, clippings of print advertisements, and other printed promotional materials; there are also name badges that Miner wore in commercials. His production papers document his work on A Delicate Balance (1966), The Deputy (1965), Duel of Angels (1960), Everything in the Garden (1967), Everybody Loves Opal (tryout tour, 1961), A Far Country (1961), Keep It In the Family (1967), Tender Loving Care (1962), Visit to a Small Planet (road company, 1958), and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (national company, 1963). The papers consists mostly of prompt books and other annotated scripts, containing light cues, sound cues, costume and prop plots, production schedules, and other production information, as well as dialogue changes. Some of the scripts only contain minor annotations. For example, the script for A Delicate Balance contains only dialogue revisions; it does not include cues. Wyman Pendleton (1916-1995) was a stage and film actor whose roles included parts in Richard Barr and Clinton Wilder productions and Edward Albee plays on and off Broadway. In 1979, he acted in the international tour of Albee Directs Albee. Pendleton also performed in the Stratford Festival in Canada from the 1950s to the 1970s. The Wyman Pendleton papers date from 1958 to 1994 and consist of scripts, posters, programs, original drawings and costume designs, and other ephemera from productions he appeared in. Some of the scripts have light annotations and contain production papers such as contact lists, performance schedules, or, in the case of screenplays, shooting schedules. Not all scripts are complete. The collection includes three original costume designs created for Pendleton's roles in the Stratford Festival in 1971 and 1972. The designs are by Annena Stubbs (for Volpone), Jane Greenwood (for Antony and Cleopatra), and Deirdre Clancy (for Macbeth). There are two unidentified drawings, possibly of Pendleton in costume, signed M. Jacobs and Blanchard, respectively. Albee Directs Albee materials include posters and promotional material from productions in South Korea, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. less
