Beth Elohim Hebrew Congregation is a Black Jewish congregation in New York City. It was founded in 1983 by Chief Rabbi Levi Ben Levy, Rabbi Sholomo Ben Levy, and the Levy family. Religious instruction is provided by a Sabbath School for Children and by Cushi Talmud Torah Hebrew School for Adults and Children. The synagogue is located in St. Albans, Queens in New York City. The Beth Elohim Hebrew Congregation records include: the certificate of incorporation; minutes of executive board meetings (1987-1993); correspondence with members, other congregations, and U.S. officials regarding involvement in the Gulf War of 1990-1991; and a file on the synagogue's Talmud Torah Hebrew School. There are files pertaining to the Ethiopian Hebrew organization known as the International Israelite Board of Rabbis, and copies of their newsletter, "Ha-Kol" (1989-1995), as well as the 1989 yearbook of the Israelite Rabbinical Academy, also based at the synagogue. Weaver papers, Additions II date from 1882 to 2008 (bulk dates 1950s-1980s) and primarily document Weaver's writing on urban development, his appointment as secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and his autobiographical project. Steward became a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1861 and served congregations in Macon, Georgia, Brooklyn, New York, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Delaware, Washington, D. C., and Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He was also the chaplain for the 25th Infantry where he served in the Philippine Islands and Cuba. In 1907 he joined the faculty of Wilberforce University, with which he was associated until his death, serving as vice-president, chaplain and professor of history, French and logic. Correspondence, writings, deeds, documents related to the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and journals. The journals constitute the largest section of the papers and cover his early years in the ministry in Georgia (1868-71), Haiti (1873), where he established a church in Port-au-Prince, and Philadelphia (1880s); his chaplaincy in Ft. Missoula and the Philippine Islands (1890s); and his years at Wilberforce University (1907-24). The journals contain a variety of items and are not arranged chronologically: drafts of sermons, essays, speeches; accounting notes; lecture notes and course notes. Two journals record marriages, baptisms and funerals performed by him in the Philippines. The correspondence includes letters to Steward from his children, Frank, Charles, Theophilus Bolden, Gustavus, his brother William and a letter from John W. Cromwell. less

Benjamin F. McLaurin (1906-1989) was a Black labor leader and civic worker who held leadership positions within the Brotherhood of the Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) during the 1920s and 1930s. He worked with A. Philip Randolph throughout the Civil Rights Movement, and later advocated for job equality and increased educational opportunities for minority communities while serving on New York City board committees. The collection, dated 1936 to 1989, showcases McLaurin's lifelong labor, civic, and political work through correspondence, project reports, meeting minutes, Senate committee statements and testimonies, convention and conference reports, and newspaper clippings. less

The National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NAARPR), founded in 1973 and still in existence today, seeks to raise awareness of America's political prisoners and prison conditions, police brutality, repressive legislation, and unfair labor practices. While most of the materials concern Black Americans, other minority groups, such as Native American activists, Puerto Rican nationalists, Chicanos, and the LGBTQ community do have a presence in this collection, as do cases involving oppression based on leftist political beliefs. Anthony Horton was an African-American man who for a period of his life was homeless and lived in the tunnels beneath the subway trains. Together with author/artist Youme Landowne, Horton wrote and illustrated "Pitch Black: Don't be Skerd" (2008) which tells the story of how the two met, his background and his life underground. Horton worked with the Theater of Oppressed NYC, frequently playing the role of a police officer in the troupe's performances. He died in a fire that ripped through his underground home. The Anthony Horton Collection consists of a mock-up for the book he and Youme Landowne wrote and illustrated together, "Pitch Black: Don't be Skerd," about Horton's life in the tunnels under the New York City subway system, and letters he wrote to his co-author/friend from 2009-2010. The letters discuss their friendship and his thoughts; most were written while he was an inmate in Downstate Correctional facility in Fishkill, New York. According to Landowne, he was incarcerated because of possession of an antique knife that he wanted to sell. There are additional writings along with original artwork and illustrations. less
