The Sidney Rose collection of Gilbert and Sullivan memorabilia dates from 1865 to 1950. It contains clippings, posters, programs, photographs, and color souvenir cards pertaining to performances of Gilbert and Sullivan operas on the east coast of the United States; a scrapbook of clippings from the British magazine Punch; newsletters and flyers produced by the Gilbert and Sullivan Society; letters to the theatrical producer Rudolph Aronson regarding performances; and essays by Sidney Rose on Gilbert and Sullivan. less

Actor, director and producer, Edwin T. Emery was the director of the WPA's Federal Theatre Project's Gilbert and Sullivan unit. He began his stage career in 1893 appearing with leading stock companies and working with Maude Adams and E. H. Sothern among others. In his later years he directed Gilbert and Sullivan revivals and was a dramatic coach in his own studios. He died in 1951 at the age of 78. Consists of lists of cast and musicians, lighting, costume and property plots, notes on scenery, and programs for the production presented by the Drama Department and Music Department of the Emergency Relief Bureau Works Division of the Department of Public Welfare in New York City. The opera, which opened on October 19th, 1934, was directed by Edwin T. Emery at Ascension Hall, Church of the Ascension on Jarvis St. in Brooklyn. less

Each half-hour episode of the program presented the highlights of one musical. In September, 1959, the Bell Telephone Hour made its television debut as a monthly musical special. It remained a regular television program until April 26, 1968. Library's holdings incomplete. Broadcasts chiefly originated from New York City, sponsored by the Bell Telephone Company (American Telephone and Telegraph). Each 30-minute program generally features a guest singer or instrumentalist, with the Bell Telephone Hour Orchestra, conducted by Donald Voorhees, and the Bell Telephone Hour Chorus. Frequent guest artists include Marian Anderson, Robert Casadesus, Nelson Eddy, Josef Hofmann, Fritz Kreisler, Oscar Levant, James Melton, Grace Moore, Ezio Pinza, Lily Pons, Bidú Sayão, Gladys Swarthout, John Charles Thomas, Helen Traubel, and Eileen Farrell.
