Howard Kyle (1861-1950) was an American stage and radio actor who was active from the 1880s to the 1930s. He served as secretary of the Actors' Equity Association from 1913 until 1919, when he resigned from the organization and joined the Actors' Fidelity League. As a member of the Players, he worked to have an Edwin Booth memorial sculpture erected in Gramercy Park. The Howard Kyle papers date from the 1870s to 1954 and contain correspondence, photographs, theater programs, event programs, clippings, and other documents concerning his professional and personal life. The collection contains materials related to his work with Actors' Equity, the Actors' Fidelity League, the Players, and other theater organizations. The collection also contains materials concerning productions he was involved with, including the Howard Kyle Players production of Nathan the Wise (1912) and performances by the Century Theatre Club. The majority of the photographs are of Kyle or his wife, actor Amy Urcilla Hodges. There are also unidentified photographs and photographs of fellow performers, including singer Rosa Ponselle. Some of the photographs are inscribed to Amy Hodges. The collection also contains an unidentified one-act script and a eulogy for actor Henry Miller. Leona Stephens (born circa 1885) and her husband Len D. Hollister (1884-1936) were writers and actors who worked on the Broadway stage and in vaudeville in the early 20th century. Following Hollister's death, Stephens continued performing and publishing songs through the 1940s. The Leona Stephens papers date from 1878 to 1952 and contain photographs, programs, song lyrics, and sheet music that document the entirety of Stephens's career, as well as her vaudeville act with Hollister. In addition, the collection includes an 1878 program from Edwin Booth's performance in Richelieu at the Pittsburgh Opera House. less

The collection contains correspondence, speeches, accounts, clippings, scripts and other papers reflecting the personal and professional life of Francis Wilson. Wilson carried on an active correspondence with many contemporaries prominent in the theatrical or literary field. The large series of speeches illustrates his wide-ranging interests. There is material on the plays in which he appeared, especially ERMINIE, and information on his involvement with the Players Club, but very little documenting his role as first president of the Actors' Equity Association or on the pivotal strike he led in 1919. The main political battle documented in these papers is Wilson's efforts to keep child actors out from under the jurisdiction of state labor laws. There is also some information on Wilson's family and his personal financial transactions. less

Anne Nichols was a playwright best known for the highly successful comedy ABIE'S IRISH ROSE, which opened on Broadway in 1922, ran for five years, and inspired two movies and a radio series. Born in Dales Mill, Georgia, in 1891, Anne Nichols became an actress as a teenager and appeared on stage and in two early silent movies by the age of 20. Her first full-length work as a playwright was HEARTS DESIRE, written with Adelaide Matthews, with whom Nichols also co-authored JUST MARRIED (1922). Writing alone, Nichols provided the libretto for the musical LOVE DREAMS (1921). ABIE'S IRISH ROSE, a comedy about the romance between an Irish girl and a Jewish boy and the inter-family clash that results, received poor reviews from most critics when it opened in 1922, but audiences loved it, and kept the play running for over 2,300 performances until October 1927. A silent film adaptation starring Buddy Rogers was released in 1929, and a sound version, produced by Bing Crosby, in 1946. The premise was also adapted into a radio series, which ran from 1942 to 1944. Anne Nichols wrote several other plays and directed as well, and later managed property for the Actors' Fund. She died in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on September 15, 1966, at the age of 74. The Anne Nichols papers contain correspondence and writings documenting a portion of her career, with the emphasis on ABIE'S IRISH ROSE. Other materials include legal files dealing with the will of William de Lignemare. There are also files and correspondence dealing with property belonging to the Actors' Fund that Anne Nichols managed for them. less

Artist Leo Mielziner (1869-1935) and his wife Ella McKenna Friend Mielziner (1873-1968), raised two sons, each of whom became prominent in the arts: Leo J. (1899-1962), a stage and screen actor and director who worked under the name Kenneth MacKenna, and Jo Mielziner (1901-1976), one of the most influential designers of theatrical scenery and lighting of the twentieth century. The Mielziner family papers consist of correspondence, most of it personal but some of a more formal nature, other papers, a few sketches, clippings, ephemera, and family photographs, some of which have been placed in small albums. less

Barnard Hughes (1915-2006) and Helen Stenborg (1925-2011) were prolific stage and screen actors. Hughes was best known for his award-winning turn as the titular character in Da, and Stenborg performed extensively with the Circle Repertory Company. Their papers date from the 1880s to 2011, and chronicle their professional careers and personal collecting interests through posters, programs, photographs, correspondence, engravings, scripts, manuscripts, and award trophies. The collection also contains theater memorabilia that Hughes inherited from Thelma Chandler, a stage manager. The Chandler memorabilia includes correspondence from Margaret Webster, the American director, producer, and actress. less

Tamara Daykarhanova (1889-1980) was a Russian-born actress and acting teacher. She debuted with the Moscow Art Theatre (Moskovskiĭ khudozhestvennyĭ akademicheskiĭ teatr) at age 18 and, following the Russian Revolution, went on to tour with the Chauve-Souris company (Teatr "Letuchai︠a︡ mysh´") throughout Europe. She settled in New York in 1923 where she founded the Tamara Daykarhanova School of the Stage. The Tamara Daykarhanova photographs date from 1897 to 1975 and document personal and professional activities throughout her life. Photographs include family portraits and informal family photographs in Russia, France, and the United States; headshots and production stills from her early career with Moscow Art Theatre and the Chauve-Souris company; and portraits of Russian and American actors contemporary to Daykarhanova. Some photographs are captioned in Russian with English translations. Also included is a calendar listing birthdays, anniversaries, and deaths of Daykarhanova's family members and friends. The Kenneth Fox papers document Fox's career and his longtime interest in theatre with contracts, programs, and photographs. Contracts originate from Fox's work on Broadway and in regional stock theatre companies from 1922 to 1926. Contracts for single productions list Fox's role and the show title. Programs, dated 1951 to 1962, are from popular Broadway musicals and plays of the 1950s and 1960s, including The Threepenny Opera. Photographs in the collection consist of autographed portraits of stage actors, some of whom were Fox's contemporaries. Photographs date from 1878 to the late 1920s and include portraits of Zelda Sears, Edith Kingdon, Fiske O'Hara, and Lotte Crabtree. less

Rachel Crothers (1878-1958) was a playwright, theater director, and co-founder of the Stage Women's War Relief and the American Theatre Wing. These papers were assembled by the executor of her estate, Anne Sheffield, and consist of programs and photographs of Crothers' productions; photographs of her colleagues and friends; three play scripts; photographs and others papers related to Crothers' war relief work; and other personal and professional mementos. A typescript titled "The Box in the Attic" contains Crother's account of some of her formative experiences as a dramatist.
