The Ignaz Anton Pilat Papers contain correspondence, official documents, newspaper clippings, booklets and pamphlets, and photographs and other graphics. The largest series is correspondence, chiefly between Pilat and other individuals involved in the construction of Central Park. There are manuscripts by Pilat describing the progress of work, as well as a letter from Frederick Law Olmsted detailing Pilat's gardening duties. Other original documents date from Pilat's residence in Austria and include a letter to Ferdinand I, in which Pilat requests the position of imperial gardener, certificates of employment and education, and Pilat's passport. Francis Vinton Greene (1850-1921) was an American soldier, engineer and author. His military duties included serving as military attaché in Russia in 1877, teaching at West Point, and commanding volunteers during the Spanish-American War. In 1903 he was appointed Police Commissioner of New York City. He also worked as an engineer on various projects and wrote military histories. Collection consists of Greene's correspondence, his papers pertaining to service in the Spanish-American War, speeches, miscellaneous materials, and books. Correspondence, 1801-1921, includes general correspondence; letters from Theodore Roosevelt, Major General Emory Upton and General William Tecumseh Sherman; and family letters. Spanish-American War papers, 1898-1900, contain orders, telegrams, accounts, reports, and some correspondence. Speeches, 1898-1918, were given by Greene as a soldier, businessman and police commissioner. Miscellaneous papers, 1801-1915, consist of a wide range of materials relating to all aspects of Greene's life and include genealogical information, orders, maps, memoranda, drafts of articles and reports, notes, photographs, and clippings. The Samuel B. Ruggles Papers document the business and civic activities of the New York lawyer, real estate developer and public servant. The Albert Shaw Papers contain correspondence (professional and personal); files concerning the books, articles, and speeches Shaw authored, administrative records and articles from the Review of Reviews; and many records of Shaw's personal life, including financial records, scrapbooks, photographs, ephemera, and his notes on the Shaw family's genealogy, as well as Shaw's personal memoirs. Materials range in date from 1827 to 1953, with the majority of the records falling between 1890 and 1947. Albert Shaw (1857-1947) was an editor, journalist and scholar who spent most of his career as the editor and publisher of the Review of Reviews, a digest of progressive thought and political analysis. Shaw's principal interests were the improvement of municipal government, the relationship of business and organized labor, agricultural reform, international affairs, and contemporary politics and economics, topics which he wrote and spoke on frequently. less

Jacob Snider (1811-1866), of Philadelphia, Pa., was an inventor of artillery, notably the Snider rifle which was used by the British Army. His son John Vaughan Snider was also an inventor. They were both involved in a lawsuit against the British government for compensation for the design of the Snider rifle. Collection consists of correspondence, documents, maps, drawings, photographs, and printed matter of Jacob and John Vaughan Snider. Jacob Snider papers contain correspondence, documents, and other items pertaining to land titles in Pennsylvania and Georgia, the delivery of rifles, and legal matters. Aaron Burr (1756-1836) was a Revolutionary War soldier, lawyer, United States Senator, and third Vice-President of the United States. Aaron Vanderpoel (1799-1870) was a lawyer, later a judge, in Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York, and in New York City. He was administrator of the estate of William Temple Franklin (1760-1823), the grandson of Benjamin Franklin. Collection consists of correspondence, legal papers, and financial documents of Vanderpoel and his father-in-law, attorney James McBride. Vanderpoel's papers pertain to his legal practice, judgeship and personal life. Bulk of his legal papers concerns his administration of the William Temple Franklin estate, 1770-1834. James McBride papers reflect his legal and real estate activities including his work on behalf of clients living in Ireland who had legal or real estate interests in New York City. Mary Crawford Murray Hyde was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society and a contributor to The New Jersey Coast in Three Centuries (The Lewis Publishing Company, 1902). William David Lewis (1792-1881) was an American merchant and banker. He worked in Russia for his brother from 1818 to 1824 and then became an importer and commission merchant in Philadelphia. He was cashier of the Girard Bank in Philadelphia from 1832 to 1842 and financed a number of Pennsylvania railroads. Collection consists of Lewis's correspondence, diary, financial and legal papers, maps, and printed matter. Correspondence includes personal correspondence, 1818-1879; and correspondence concerning railroads, 1829-1864. Diary, 1840, is a journal of a trial trip of the boat Eureka. Financial papers, 1831-1862, and legal papers, 1841, also pertain to railroads during the period when Lewis was cashier at the Girard Bank. They include his father, Lester Ford (1798-1888) of Lebanon, Conn.; his mother, Eliza Burnham Ford (d. 1834); his stepmother, Lucy Burnham Ford (cousin of Eliza); and Eliza's brother Gordon Burnham (1803-1885); Gordon Ford's siblings, Marcia, Eliza (d. ca. 1886), William, and Henry B. Ford; and four of his children, Kathleen Ford Turle (b. 1856), Rosalie Ford Barr (b. 1859), Mabel Ford Mayo-Smith (b. 1863), and Malcolm Webster Ford (1862-1902), an amateur athlete in the 1880s. Fowler family correspondence, 1818-1870, consists chiefly of letters to and from William Chauncey Fowler and his wife Harriet W. Fowler. Chauncey papers, 1744-1857, include correspondence, deeds, legal records, and other materials. General and unidentified correspondence, 1833-1906, contains letters whose sender or receiver cannot be determined, and letters of individuals who are apparently unrelated to the Ford family. Personal and family papers include juvenalia, school records and memoranda of activities of Malcolm Ford and his sisters. Notes and memoranda consist of ephemera, either not of a personal nature or only indirectly concerned with the Fords. Unidentified papers are short writings and documents; printed matter includes clippings and other materials. Prints consist of items, such as pictures of notable Americans, views and buildings. Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing.
