John R. Strachen was born in Harlem. He attended De Witt Clinton High School and received a degree from New York University. He spent four years in the armed forces, followed by two years in the New York City public school system. He became a postal clerk in 1941; he was promoted to a supervisory position in 1959, where he helped implement the zip code system in New York City. After a stint as the Acting Postmaster of New York in 1966 and confirmation by the U.S. Senate, he became the Postmaster of New York in 1967. The John R. Strachen papers consist of materials related to his role as Postmaster of New York. Included are letters and telegrams of congratulations upon his appointment as Acting Postmaster of New York City, 1966, and his nomination and appointment to Postmaster in 1967. Samuel Lawrence Gouverneur (1799-1867), American politician and capitalist, was postmaster of New York City from 1828 to 1836. His wife, Maria Hester Monroe, was the daughter of U.S. President James Monroe. After 1850, Gouverneur moved to Maryland. Collection consists of letters to Gouverneur from John Quincy Adams, John C. Calhoun, William Henry Harrison, Winfield Scott, and others; drafts or copies of Gouverneur's letters; and his correspondence, 1835, as postmaster of New York, with the Antislavery Society, the postmaster of Charleston, S.C., and the authorities at Washington, D.C., concerning disturbances caused by the transmission of abolitionist matter through the mails. less

The New York Mail and Newspaper Transportation Company was the original contractor in 1898 for mail delivery by pneumatic tube between Manhattan and Brooklyn. The company later became a contractor for tube service between post offices within Manhattan. In 1953 pneumatic tube service ended in New York and the company's contract was cancelled. Collection consists of correspondence and documents pertaining to the New York Mail and Newspaper Transportation Company's delivery of mail in New York City using pneumatic tubes, and of U.S. government publications concerning mail delivery in New York City and nationwide. Records, 1897-1957, include contracts, Post Office Dept. orders, reports, plans, proposals, photographs, and clippings.
