The Stage Door Canteen was a New York City venue run by the American Theatre Wing that offered food, socialization, and entertainment free of charge for U.S. military men during World War II. The original, New York City venue opened on March 2, 1942 in the basement of a theater on 44th Street in New York's theater district. Eventually, Stage Door Canteens were set up in cities across the country, as well as in London and Paris. The venues closed with the end of World War II in 1945. The collection consists of 278 black and white photographs of musicians and audience members at the Stage Door Canteen from the years 1943 to 1945. Photographs were taken by several different New York City news photographers and primarily depict musicians in the act of performing. Musicians include instrumentalists and singers from genres of classical, jazz, country, blues, and gospel. less

Lil Liandre (1910-2003) was a professional dancer, choreographer, director and teacher. An integral part of the burgeoning New York City dance scene, Liandre contributed to the transformation of American dance in the period between World Wars I and II. Liandre's expansive career took her from collaborations with Martha Graham, Jerome Robbins and other modern dance luminaries to teaching and healing others through dance therapy. The Lil Liandre papers contain photographs, negatives and slides; correspondence; choreography notes; press clippings; programs and flyers; creative writing, including essays, plays, short stories and poetry; personal memorabilia; and a travel diary. less

Naomi Ornest (d. 2007) was an opera singer active in the late 1940s and early 1950s. She was later an opera director and translator. Her husband, William Yokel, a writer, worked for the American Theatre Wing (ATW). The Naomi Ornest and William Yokel papers date from 1945 to 1989 and document the career of Naomi Ornest through scores and correspondence. They also detail William Yokel’s production for the American Theatre Wing of the WNYC radio program, Music on the Wing, through correspondence and scripts. less

Established by the American Theatre Wing during World War II as part of their Stage Door Canteen program, the Merchant Seamen's Club provided services, food, and entertainment to merchant marines passing through the Port of New York. Most significant in the collection are the registers containing miniature facsimiles of sketches and caricatures of merchant seamen which were sent free of charge to the mens' families or friends. The collection, dated 1937 to 1960s (bulk dates 1950s), consists primarily of photographic negatives representing images that Mélançon photographed prior to his appointment at the Metropolitan Opera, and during his hiatus from the Opera. less

The papers of Walter Abel consist primarily of correspondence, contracts, speeches, and clippings documenting his work as an actor. The professional correspondence is not extensive: the bulk is single letters received from a wide variety of individuals, much of it letters of thanks. A few outgoing letters discuss proposed productions. Correspondents include John Golden, Robert Edmond Jones and Eugene Ormandy. The contracts file is incomplete. Speeches, for the most part lectures on Shakespeare, theater history, and the psychology of acting, reflect his tireless work promoting the theater to college students and others. Clippings consist of production reviews and interviews with Abel. Production materials are mostly miscellaneous single items such as call sheets and schedules from films in which Abel appeared. Organizational work consists of minutes and correspondence pertaining to his work with ANTA, the Hollywood Victory Committee and other war service organizations. The collection also contains personal material on his family, awards, and a few scrapbooks of photographs. less
