John Askin was born in Ireland in 1739, and came to North America with the British Army in 1758. Following the British takeover of New France, Askin entered the fur trade, working out of Detroit. Account book of John Askin, recording money paid and received for goods as part of a trade route between Detroit and Albany, 20 May - 21 July, 1762. Trade locations include Detroit, Niagara, Fort Ontario, Oswego Falls, Fort Brewington, Blockhouse, Fort Stanwix, Little Falls, Schenectady, and Albany. Robert Rogers (1731-1795), American Loyalist and frontiersman, served in the British army during the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, and commanded Rogers' Rangers. The papers include a letter of license to fur trader John Askin (1739-1815), with whom Rogers was involved in a business venture, to transact business without molestation by his creditors for twelve months; a permit to suttlers Askin (here, Erskine) and Gordon to pass with refreshments for Rogers' troops; a 1760 letter to Capt. Abraham Douw from Paul Burbeen discussing, among other matters, the success of Rogers' tour; an account of sundry merchandise shipped from Niagara to Detroit in October, 1760; and a document signed by Rogers granting power of attorney to John Askin. less
