Russell and Volkening is one of New York's oldest literary agencies, opened in 1940 by Diarmuid Russell and Henry Volkening. They represented some of the most noted writers in the history of American publishing, including Eudora Welty, Bernard Malamud, Anne Tyler, George Plimpton, Barbara Tuchman, Saul Bellow, Ann Petry, A. J. Liebling, and Nadine Gordimer. Included in the collection are business correspondence; financial material; inventories and submission records of manuscripts submitted to the agency and through the agency to publishers and others; some manuscripts; and other material regarding the business of the agency. The bulk of the collection is represented by correspondence between Diarmuid Russell, Henry Volkening, Timothy Seldes, and other agents and their clients, notably Eudora Welty, Barbara Tuchman, Mavis Gallant, May Sarton, George Plimpton, Anne Petry, Wright Morris, and many others. less

Jean Stein (1934-2017) was an American author, oral historian, editor, and philanthropist. She worked as an editor at The Paris Review, under George Plimpton, and co-edited the literary and visual arts magazine Grand Street with Walter Hopps. She was married to William vanden Heuvel and Torsten Wiesel. The Jean Stein papers (1916-2016) document Stein's career and life. The works most extensively represented are Stein's oral history biography of the American actress and Andy Warhol muse, Edie Sedgwick, Edie: An American Biography, (1982); and the oral history West of Eden: An American Place, which focused on five families and individuals Stein considered essential to the history of Los Angeles. Personal files, which include letters Stein received from novelist William Faulkner, document Stein's childhood of wealth and privilege as a the daughter of talent agent and MCA founder, Jules Stein; and her adult life as a member of New York's intellectual elite. less

Terry Southern (May 1, 1924-October 29, 1995) was an American author, essayist, screenwriter and university lecturer, noted for his satirical style. The Terry Southern archive spans the years 1924 to 1995, with the bulk dated 1955 to 1995. The collection consists chiefly of autograph and typescript drafts of Southern's novels, stories, screenplays, television scripts; journals, diaries, and notebooks. Other materials include incoming and outgoing correspondence, photographs, personal and financial papers and documents (including passports, hunting license, mortgage documents, bank statements, and canceled checks), publishing contracts, newspaper clippings, and realia, including his typewriter. Also included in the archive is writing by others, including Peter Beard, William S. Burroughs, Gregory Corso, Jules Feiffer, Bruce J. George Plimpton was a journalist, author, and editor who is best known as the founding editor-in-chief of the Paris Review, and for his participatory sports writing. Plimpton's papers date from 1902 to 2008, and document his literary career, forays into film and television, public appearances, and his personal history. The collection contains manuscripts, notes, and research from most of Plimpton's published works, as well as correspondence, photographs, and biographical files from throughout his life. less

Weekly 30-minute NBC radio broadcasts, featuring classical and light classical music, which began on Apr. 29, 1940 and continued until 1958. In September, 1959, the Bell Telephone Hour made its television debut as a monthly musical special. It remained a regular television program until April 26, 1968. Library's holdings incomplete. Broadcasts chiefly originated from New York City, sponsored by the Bell Telephone Company (American Telephone and Telegraph). Each 30-minute program generally features a guest singer or instrumentalist, with the Bell Telephone Hour Orchestra, conducted by Donald Voorhees, and the Bell Telephone Hour Chorus. Ecco Press was an independent small-trade publisher known for presenting distinguished new work in international poetry and fiction writing through its books and its journal Antaeus, and for reissuing neglected classics in a variety of fields, including travel and food writing. Daniel Halpern (b. 1945) started Antaeus in 1970 with the help of Paul Bowles. His search for financial backing for Antaeus led to the creation of Ecco Press in 1971 with co-founder and publisher Drue Heinz. Heinz retired in 1991, transferring ownership of Ecco Press to Halpern, its editor-in-chief. Ecco Press remained an independent firm, although affiliated with publishers Viking Press and W.W. Norton & Company for sales and distribution, until its acquisition by HarperCollins in 1999. The Ecco Press records contain correspondence, memoranda, administrative and financial records, typescripts, galleys, page proofs, bound books and periodicals, photographs, jacket art, posters, a sound recording and computer data storage that document the founding and day-to-day operations of the press. The records also reflect the personal life and career of Daniel Halpern as an editor, poet, teacher, anthologist, and prominent literary figure, as well as such literary activities as the National Poetry Series which Halpern ran out of the Ecco Press offices.
