These documents are records of the Holland Land Company's dealings with Aaron Burr in 1796 and 1799. Herman LeRoy, Jan Lincklaen, and Geritt Boon were Company agents. One document is a December 1, 1796 contract to sell Burr 100,000 acres of land in New York; it is signed by Burr and Herman LeRoy and witnessed by Alexander Hamilton and Theophile Cazenove. A second document is a cancellation of the contract, dated June 13, 1799. This cancellation is signed by Burr, Herman LeRoy, and Le Roy, Bayard & McEvers and witnessed by Theophile Cazenove and C. Hardoin. Attached to this cancellation is a plat drawing locating the land. The drawing, which has been mutilated, originally measured 15 x 19 inches less

Benjamin Walker (born 1753 in London) was an American soldier, land agent, and U.S. representative from New York, 1801-1803. He served as aide-de-camp to Friederich Wilhelm von Steuben and George Washington during the Revolutionary War, and was appointed Naval Officer of Customs for the port of New York in 1789. Walker also worked as a land agent for William Duer and for the Pulteney Estate. He moved to Utica, New York in 1797 where he died in 1818. Letters to and from Benjamin Walker, in chronological order, pertain mostly to land transactions and commissions. Correspondents include Patrick Colquhoun of London and William Duer, referring in part to funding German settlers for Genesee lands in New York. Wartime communications, 1782-1783, include two letters to Captain Pierre-Etienne Du Ponceau. An undated letter in French from Baron von Steuben asks Walker to write a letter in English to the Governor of New Jersey for his signature, and mentions efforts to influence Haring, probably Cornelius Haring, agent of confiscated land in Bergen County. Former Army officer William North advises Walker of the death of a friend, 1806, and an 1820 letter concerns Walker's estate. William Smith Jr. (1728-1793), an American Loyalist of New York and Quebec, was a prominent jurist, statesman, journalist and historian. The collection comprises Smith's autograph letter signed to Sir William Johnson concerning land holdings of the late Sir Henry Moore, 1772 May 22; his autograph letter signed to Mr. [Oliver] Templeton discussing the case of the schooner Isabella, 1775 February 17; a signed legal opinion on the will of Andries Stockholm, 1773 September 5; and an autograph draft dissent on a bill before the Provincial Council concerning non-resident electors, signed and undated. William Smith (1697-1769) was a New York City lawyer and a Justice of the New York Supreme Court of Judicature. He was the father of American Loyalist William Smith Jr. (1728-1793). The collection consists of three documents signed by William Smith (1697-1769), 1734-1766, and a rough draft of a letter addressed to Smith by the Province's Attorney General, John Tabor Kempe, 1766 April 18. Documents comprise a receipt for a loaned legal document, 1734 March 25; John W. De Peyster's declaration, signed by De Peyster, Smith and others, that he was acting in trust for Smith in signing a land grant petition, 1754 September 30; and Smith's attestation for a land deed, 1766 July 30. Kempe's letter expresses displeasure over Smith's recent remarks to him concerning a case under Smith's adjudication.
