Harold Arlen, composer was born in Buffalo, New York in 1905. He composed the music for such well-known songs as: "Over the Rainbow", "Stormy Weather", "That Old Black Magic", and "Blues in the Night". Among his collaborators were: E. Y. Harburg, Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, Dorothy Fields and Leo Robbin. The Harold Arlen Papers consist of outlines and scripts sent him by agents and playwrights. Scripts included in the collection have been separated and added to the scripts file. The collection spans the years 1947 to 1967. The papers of Montgomery Clift consist of a small amount of correspondence, scripts, photographs, notes and scrapbooks. The strength of the collection is in the large number of annotated scripts which range from early drafts to final scripts. The annotations provide insight both to Clift's involvement in the development of the films and plays and the characters he portrayed. Some plays included are : THE SEA GULL (1954), THERE SHALL BE NO NIGHT (1940), YOU TOUCHED ME (1945) and YR. OBEDIENT HUSBAND (1938). Films include: THE BIG LIFT (1950), THE DEFECTOR (1966), FREUD (1962), FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (1953), JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG (1961), THE MISFITS (1961), A PLACE IN THE SUN (1951), RAINTREE COUNTY (1957), THE SEARCH (1948), SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER (1959), WILD RIVER (1960) and THE YOUNG LIONS (1958), among others. Included as well is a manuscript for an unproduced screenplay written by Clift and Kevin McCarthy, Clift's friend and collaborator. less

Clifford Odets, a leading playwright of the 1930s, was born in Philadelphia on July 18, 1906. He began his performing career as "The Rover Reciter" in local talent shows, on radio, and in local stock theatre companies. In 1929, he acted in small roles with the Theatre Guild, from whose auspices emerged the Group Theatre in 1931. Odets' first successful play was the one-act play Waiting for Lefty, which received its first theatrical production by the Group Theatre in March 1935. In 1936, Odets began working in Hollywood as a screenwriter on The Silent Partnerfor the Group. His 1937 play Golden Boy, also written for the Group, became his biggest commercial success. His last Broadway hit was The Country Girl in 1950. His last finished play, The Flowering Peach, was a finalist for the 1954 Pulitzer Prize. Odets died in Los Angeles on August 14, 1963. The Clifford Odets papers contain diaries, scripts, screenplays, personal and professional notes, research materials, clippings, photographs, and scrapbooks. In addition, the collection contains other writings by Odets such as poetry, short stories, articles, and paintings. Lastly, the collection holds Margaret Brenman-Gibson's biographical notes on Clifford Odets and his father, Louis J. Odets, for her book Clifford Odets - American Playwright: The Years from 1906-1940. less
