Adam W. Spies (1800-1891), the son of Mary Bergh and John Spies, was a hardware and military goods merchant in New York City. He was employed by the firm of C. & J. D. Wolfe, and was their agent in England in the 1820s. In 1834 he established A. W. Spies & Company, later Spies, Kissam & Company, retiring in 1866. He acquired extensive landholdings in New York City, upstate New York, and numerous other states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, and Wisconsin, among others. In 1832 he married Sarah Ann Morrison (d. 1883), daughter of John C. Morrison of Monmouth County, New Jersey. Spies was a founding member of the Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor.The Adam W. Spies real estate and genealogy scrapbook is primarily a record of his real estate transactions, containing numerous manuscript plat maps, many in watercolor with extensive annotations; a few printed maps; listings of properties, taxes and assessments; and legal notes. Holdings in Manhattan and Williamsburg, Brooklyn are especially well documented. Genealogical materials include charts and notes concerning the Spies, Morrison, and Bergh families, and autobiographical accounts, with advice to grandchildren, recalling his career, his service as a volunteer fireman, and life in Manhattan prior to the building of the Erie Canal and Croton Aqueduct. The volume also contains pasted clippings, certificates and receipts, cut silhouettes of Spies, and a few sketches, notably a watercolor street view by Spies of his father’s place of business in Manhattan as depicted in 1808. There are some miscellaneous letters and notes relating to family and real estate matters, some loose, including a genealogical inquiry to his son-in-law John W. Cochrane dated 1907. A few of Spies’s genealogical entries are updated to 1930. William Wilson (1756-1828) of Clermont, Columbia County, New York, was a physician, postmaster, and judge, and an estate manager for the Livingston family at Clermont. The William Wilson family papers, 1792-1884, comprise professional and personal correspondence of William Wilson and his sons Robert L. Wilson and William H. Wilson; correspondence among family members, including letters from Stephen B. Wilson during his U.S. Navy service; documents recording real property transactions, mostly in Columbia County; notebooks and maps of land surveys conducted in Columbia and Dutchess Counties, signed by John Wigram, Alexander Thompson and others; financial and legal documents; and printed ephemera. The papers chiefly pertain to Wilson's management of business affairs for the Livingston family, as well as for himself, and his own engagement in political and civic affairs in Columbia County; roles carried on to some extent by his son William H. Wilson. Also included are professional certificates and printed matter. William Wilson's notable correspondents include Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813), Edward P. Livingston (1779-1843), Nicholas Romayne (1756-1817), and Richard Varick (1753-1831). less

Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn (1783-1851) of Roxbury, Massachusetts was a politician, militia officer, author and horticulturist. Born in Exeter, New Hampshire, he was the son of Henry Dearborn (1751-1829), an American army officer and statesman, and Dorcas Osgood Marble. The volume contains H.A.S. Dearborn's manuscript writings describing Henry Dearborn's military service in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, with clippings, correspondence and sworn statements related to his father's controversial published account of the battle of Bunker Hill (1818). Included is a manuscript map showing the position of American and British forces at the battle of Fort George in 1813. The compilation has a title page and table of contents (i-ix, 380 pages). Dearborn's manuscript work, in one volume with loose drafts, is an edited transcription of journals kept from 1777 December 5 to 1782 October 5 by his father, Continental Army officer Henry Dearborn of New Hampshire. Drafts include prefatory material for the journal of Sullivan's Campaign against the Six Nations in 1779, and rough notes taken by H.A.S. Dearborn regarding the captivity of Mrs. Rennels, one of a party of freed Indian captives transported to Saratoga by Henry Dearborn in the summer of 1782. The work was intended for publication. less
