The Donnell Library Center of The New York Public Library, located on West 53rd Street in Manhattan, opened in 1955. It was built with funds left to NYPL by Ezekiel J. Donnell, an Irish-born cotton merchant who died in 1896. The Donnell Library Center houses The New York Public Library branch system's largest circulating collection of materials in languages other than English, films and videotapes, and materials for children and teenagers. As a unit of the Central Libraries serving a sizable Midtown area, the Donnell Library Center also has a large general reference collection and a widely used circulating collection of fiction and non-fiction for adults. Donnell presents free cultural events and exhibits throughout the year.
