The National Sculpture Society was founded in New York City in 1893 to foster the development and appreciation of sculpture. Society sponsors exhibitions, conducts technical and historical research, participates in international medal expositions, and awards prizes. Collection consists chiefly of letters to William Herbert as secretary of the society, from sculptors, architects, officials of art organizations, and others, relating to the affairs of the society, including exhibitions, meetings, election of new members, adoption of new constitution, and the formation of the McKinley Memorial Award jury. Correspondents include Gutzon Borglum, Richard Rogers Bowker, H.K. Bush-Brown, Daniel Chester French, John La Farge, and Augustus Saint-Gaudens. less

Elizabeth Buehrmann was a photographer active from 1900 through the 1960s in Chicago and New York. She was a member of Alfred Stieglitz's Photo-Secession. Bulk of the collection consists of letters received by Buehrmann. Also, letterbooks for the period from 1875 to 1913; Bowker's writings and speeches; diaries, 1859-1932; and travel journals from the 1860s to 1926 for trips in the United States, the West Indies, Europe, the Near East, and around the world in 1898. Collection consists mainly of 18th-20th century autographs, with the bulk from the mid-19th to 20th centuries, representing both primary and secondary figures from diverse fields including literature, music, education, politics, and royalty. Names include Susan B. Anthony, John Bigelow, Edwin Booth, Frederick Douglass, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, H.L. Mencken, Franklin Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Margaret Sanger, Philip Schuyler, and Daniel Webster. Figures represented are mainly Americans. Many letters are to Anthony.
