Morris Robert Werner (1897-1981) was an American journalist and writer in the fields of history, biography and current events. He was a sales agent for chemical dyes in China and then became a foreign correspondent for a British newspaper and for the Paris edition of the New York Herald Tribune. His literary work included writing articles for various American periodicals, a biography of Fiorello H. La Guardia, and his autobiography. Collection consists of correspondence, writings of Werner, photographs, and printed matter. Bulk of the papers is correspondence, 1920-1981, with friends, family, colleagues, editors, and publishers. Most letters relate to Werner's literary contributions to various periodicals, his work as a foreign correspondent, and his books, especially his unpublished biography of La Guardia. Also included are historical manuscript letters collected by Werner. Writings contain typescripts, 1920-1966, of articles by Werner, of his biography of La Guardia, of his autobiography, of his diaries, 1920, 1935-1943, and of book reviews. Photographs are of Werner and his family and friends. Printed matter includes clippings of articles and copies of magazines and journals containing articles by Werner. less

Edward Estlin Cummings was an American poet, novelist, playwright and essayist. He was a graduate of Harvard University (B.A. 1915, M.A. 1916). Le Baron Russell Briggs (1855-1934) was a professor, dean, and college president at Harvard University. E.E. Cummings submitted this unpublished academic essay, "Remarks Occassioned [sic] by Poetry" for a course he took at Harvard with Le Baron Russell Briggs, History and Principles of English Versification ("English 16"). Cummings places his literary analysis in the context of an entertaining conversation with a spirit, the discussion ranging from Beowulf to the modernists of his own time. Aside from the notation of a spelling error in the title, emendations appear to be made by Cummings. The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files. less
