The collection consists of episodes of the weekly half-hour television program, John's Cabaret, which has aired on the New York public access channel, Metro Access, dating back to 1980. In each episode, John Wallowitch answers live call-in requests to perform songs by composers such as Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Noel Coward, Sammy Cahn, Michael Leonard, Burton Lane, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein, and Wallowitch himself. Dorothy Loudon (1925-2003) was a singer, comedienne and Tony Award-winning actress, who appeared in supper clubs, television shows, films, summer stock and on Broadway. The bulk of the materials in this collection are from 1940-2003. They extensively cover the personal life and professional career of Dorothy Loudon, including materials relating to stage, film and television productions, albums, nightclub performances as well as personal correspondence. less

Lennie Hayton was a jazz pianist, composer, conductor, and arranger active from the 1920's through the 1960's. Hayton worked on a number of radio programs, including Lucky Strike's Your Hit Parade (1935), and the Ed Wynn Show (1936). He was musical director of MGM from 1940 to 1953, and worked on many movies as an arranger, conductor, or musical director. Hayton married Lena Horne in 1947, and worked with her as a manager-pianist-arranger. The collection contains selections of Hayton's work on radio and in the studio, as well as recordings of Lena Horne and other performers. Recordings of his radio work include selected episodes of Lucky Strike Your Hit Parade, Ed Wynn Show, Chesterfield's Music that satisfies, and Ipana's Hour of Smiles programs. Included in the collection are recordings of Lena Horne on studio acetates, as well as live radio recordings. Also included in the collection are radio recordings of both popular and classical music performances that Hayton owned. less

The collection consists of noncommercial recordings primarily of opera performances from 1936 to 1981 by major American and European houses, collected and in many cases recorded by Richard McGuinn. Opera houses represented include the Bayreuth Festival, Covent Garden, La Scala, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Metropolitan Opera, Salzburg Festival, San Francisco Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. The largest portion of the collection consists of broadcast of The New York Philharmonic, with selected concerts from 1952-1963. Conductors of the New York Philharmonic concerts on these recordings include Franco Autori, Leonard Bernstein, Guido Cantelli, Dmitri Mitropoulos, Paul Paray, George Szell, and Bruno Walter. Guest soloists include Claudio Arrau, Robert Casadesus, Van Cliburn, Clifford Curzon, Rudolf Firkušný, Zino Francescatti, Jascha Heifetz, Myra Hess, Byron Janis, Martha Lipton, Artur Rubinstein, Irmgard Seefried, Rudolf Serkin, and Richard Tucker. less

Among his clients were Skitch Henderson, the New York Pops, Ben E. King, Neil Sedaka, and the Broadway musical Raggedy Ann. Applebaum papers, which date from 1940 to 2007, are comprised primarily of scores for his arrangements, orchestrations, compositions, and commercial advertising; and sound recordings of his music for radio and television advertising. The Portia Nelson papers document her career and life with scripts, sheet music, photographs, scrapbooks, correspondence, and artwork. less

The CBS Collection represents music obtained and used by the organization and stored at CBS headquarters at 485 Madison Avenue, NY. Dance band music used by orchestras broadcast over the Columbia Broadcasting System (i.e. CBS Inc.). Arrangements of popular music from the areas of Hollywood films, Broadway theater, Tin Pan Alley, the Harlem Renaissance and operetta make up the bulk of the collection. The CBS library containing these arrangements was active from the late 1920's to the early 1970's, though most of the music represented was composed and published in the thirty year span of 1915 - 1945. Typical orchestration of the arrangements include vocal parts, piano, one or two violins, four or five saxophones, two or three trumpets, one or two trombones, banjo or guitar, bass and drums, though some are scored for as few as three parts or as large as a chamber orchestra with all woodwind and string instruments represented. less
