Mary Garrett Hay (1857-1928) was an American suffragist and civic leader who was active in the New York suffrage movement. She helped Carrie Chapman Catt set up the offices of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in New York in 1895. Hay was president of the New York State Federation of Women's Clubs from 1910 to 1912, chair of the League of Women Voters in New York City from 1918 to 1923, and served the Republican Party in various official capacities. Collection consists of scrapbook with materials related to Hay's career. Scrapbook contains letters, reports, clippings, leaflets, pamphlets, speeches, and photographs pertaining to her work on behalf of women's clubs, the Republican Party, suffrage, and the League of Women Voters for the years 1895 to 1928. There are also letters of condolence after Hay's death. less

Rossiter Johnson (1840-1931) was an American author and editor. In addition to editing historical and reference works, he wrote biographies, histories and poetry. He and his first wife, Helen Kendrick Johnson (1844-1914), were ardent anti-feminists who belonged to various organizations opposed to women's suffrage. Helen Johnson was also an author and editor. Collection contains the Johnson's correspondence, accounts, writings, notes, photographs, and printed matter. Rossiter Johnson's papers consist mainly of correspondence with family members and literary, social and political associates. Other materials are accounts, speeches, notes, and printed matter. Records document the varied activities of the National Council of Women, chiefly its executive committee meetings, annual and biennial meetings, conferences, seminars, and other events, and the work of its ad hoc and standing committees, especially the International Hospitality Committee. Collection consists mainly of letters to and from executive committee members and standing committee chairmen; programs, agendas, minutes, and transcripts of meetings and conferences; printed matter, including NCW's newsletters and annual reports; audio tapes; and photographs. General and historical files, 1888-1973, include records relating to the objectives and operations of the NCW, histories of the organization, brochures, and copies of the newsletter. Executive committee meeting files, 1888-1970, include minutes, correspondence, press releases, reports, and other related materials. Executive committee correspondence, 1914-1970, consists of memoranda, form letters, telegrams, and other correspondence to and from committee members and executive directors. Committee files, 1943-1976, contain minutes of meetings of committee chairmen and individual committees, correspondence, annual reports, membership lists, and materials relating to standing, ad hoc and affiliated committees. Flora May Holly (1868-1960) was an American literary critic and agent who represented Theodore Dreiser and Edna Ferber among others. She was an editor at Bookman Magazine and also organized several professional associations of women writers. Collection consists of personal and business papers of Holly. Personal file, 1910-1958, includes correspondence, autobiographical writings, scrapbook and memorabilia. General correspondence, 1930-1959, is with authors, publishers and associates. Business files, 1931-1958, contain client files, literary manuscripts and criticism, notes, contracts, and royalty statements. Professional and community activities file, 1929-1958, concerns Holly's activities in Stamford, Conn. and New York City. Financial records, 1940-1960, document personal and business matters. Also, photographs of Holly and others. Bulk of the collection is correspondence pertaining to authors including Theodore Dreiser, Edna Ferber and Noel Coward; papers of Arthur Maurice, author and editor of the Bookman; and Holly's work with the Connecticut branch of the National League of American Pen Women. Microfilm reel contains correspondence including letters from Dreiser and photograph of Dreiser (location of originals is unknown). less
