Artist and gay rights activist Copy Berg was born Vernon E. Berg, III on July 10, 1951. He attended the United States Naval Academy from 1970-1974 and then served with the U. S. Navy Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. In 1975 the Navy sought to release him by General Discharge on grounds of homosexuality. Berg fought a highly publicized legal battle against the Navy but lost the case and was released in 1976. He settled in New York where he studied at Pratt Institute and launched his career as an artist. In 1986 Berg was diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). His subsequent artwork explored the social response to the AIDS epidemic, sexual politics and sadomasochism. Berg died of an AIDS-related illness on January 27, 1999. The Easter Rising internees autograph album, 1916, contains autograph entries of prominent participants in the Irish independence movement held in British prisons at Knutsford and Reading in England; the men were arrested and interned in connection with the Irish revolutionary uprising of April 1916, known as the Easter Rising. Autographs are usually accompanied by patriotic quotes, poetry, or personal sentiments. Entries may include an individual's military or other affiliation, home address, and previous internment locations in Ireland and Britain, such as Frongoch in Wales. The volume ([42] leaves, 1 blank leaf, loose front endpaper lacking) begins with the signature of Donnchadh Mac Con Uladh [Denis McCullough]. On the last page, Liam Tobin lists the prisons in which he had been incarcerated, including Knutsford but not Reading. The earliest entries are dated June 1916 at Knutsford; the latest are dated at Reading, December 22 and 23, and Nodlaig [Christmas], 1916. Internees were released at that time and returned to Ireland. Among the many names, signed in English or Irish, are Ernest Blythe, Frank Burke, Peter DeLoughry, Edward Dondon, Arthur Griffith, Sean T. O'Kelly, Richard McCormick, J. J. O'Connell, M. W. O'Reilly, and Cathal O'Shannon. A few individuals signed the album twice. Notable content includes a watercolor cartoon signed by Sean Milroy, anticipating "Capt O'Rielly" being welcomed back in Ireland, and a poem signed by Darrell Figgis, "In Memoriam / P. H. Herbert Mitgang (1920- ), author, editor, journalist, and motion-picture producer, was managing editor of the U.S. Army newspaper Stars and Stripes, during World War II. After his war service, he joined the New York Times as a copy editor and reviewer. He served as supervising editor of the Sunday Times drama section from 1955 to 1962, editorial writer and member of the editorial board from 1963 to 1964 and again from 1967 to 1976. From 1964 to 1967 he was assistant to the president and the executive editor of CBS News and produced several documentary films. He taught at City College in New York, was a visiting lecturer at Yale University and served as president of both the Authors' League and the Authors' Guild. Since 1976 Mitgang has been a cultural correspondent and book reviewer for the New York Times. In addition to his work at the Times and CBS, he has written articles, novels and biographies and has edited several books. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, files relating to publications, notes, clippings, photographs, motion pictures, recordings, videotapes, and memorabilia that document Mitgang's activities as a journalist, author, editor, and film producer. Papers include general correspondence, 1945-1979; New York Times editorial correspondence, 1970-1976; and correspondence concerning Authors' Guild, 1957-1979, Authors' League, 1962-1973, and Times Op-Ed page. Also, typescripts, notes, clippings, and other materials for his articles, reviews, biographies, novels, scripts, and other writings; and files, 1983-1988, collected by Mitgang for his book Dangerous Dossiers. Other items consist of photographs, notebooks, awards, teaching notes, clippings, Stars and Stripes scrapbook, cartoons, and memorabilia. Materials relating to his documentaries include scripts and notes, films, videotapes and audio recordings of programs produced for CBS News; these include documentaries on Carl Sandburg, Henry Moore, and Jimmy Walker, and interviews with David Ben-Gurion, Anthony Eden, Admiral Gene R. James M. Geraghty (1905-1983) was the art editor of The New Yorker magazine from 1939 to 1973. During his tenure, he also edited nine of the magazine's cartoon albums. Collection consists of correspondence, original art, unpublished manuscript, photographs, printed matter, and ephemera that document Geraghty's career and his friendships with New Yorker cartoonists. Bulk of the collection is his correspondence with artists and colleagues. Original art is largely Christmas cards created by New Yorker artists. Unpublished manuscript is annotated partial manuscript by Geraghty for a book about his years at the magazine. Photographs are of New Yorker artists and staff. Also, scrapbook of items concerning Geraghty's life and career, original art by Robert Day and Susanne Suba, personal documents, newsclippings, and posthumous items collected and annotated by Eva Geraghty. less
