George Sidney Hellman (1878-1958), American author and editor, was a rare book, manuscript and art dealer and collector in New York City. He amassed collections of his own and helped secure major acquisitions for the Pierpont Morgan Library. He founded and edited the literary magazine, East & West, 1900-1901; and from 1919 to 1920 served as director of the American Expeditionary Forces University's School of Fine Arts for servicemen in France. His publications include Washington Irving, Esquire (1925), The True Stevenson (1925), Benjamin N. Cardozo, American Judge (1940), and hundreds of book reviews and magazine articles. Collection consists of Hellman's correspondence, writings, research notes, scrapbooks, photographs, and printed matter. General correspondence, 1888-1958, contains his letters to and from fellow students and professors at Columbia University; letters concerning his activities as editor of East & West and as art and manuscript dealer and collector; as well as correspondence with fellow scholars and publishers regarding his research and writing on Washington Irving, Robert Louis Stevenson, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Benjamin N. Cardozo, and the Seligman family. George Henry Sargent (1867-1931), American bibliographer and journalist, was associated with the Boston Evening Transcript from 1895 until 1931. He wrote books and articles on bibliography and a column, The Bibliographer, about rare books. Collection consists of correspondence relating to bibliography, personal and professional papers, and Sargent's autograph and facsimile collections. Correspondence, 1883-1930, is from readers of his column, bibliographical colleagues, and family members. Personal and business papers, ca. 1910s-1930, include lists and descriptions of books and manuscripts in libraries and private collections; typescripts of Sargent's essays on bibliographical topics and some poems; accounts, 1906-1922; notes; and printed matter. Autograph collection contains 18th through 20th century letters, signatures, and a few photographs and documents of a variety of prominent people. Booksellers series, ca. 1879-1937, reflects Eames's long and varied involvement in the book trade with materials such as correspondence, bills, sales catalogs, booklists, and publication notices. New York Public Library/Lenox Library papers, ca. 1883-1935, include lists of holdings (rare books, maps, etc.) prepared by Eames, reports on Library activities by Eames, Library printed matter, clippings, and miscellaneous papers. Dr. Thomas Addis Emmet (1828-1919) was a renowned surgeon and early collector of American manuscripts of the revolutionary era. His collection was purchased by John S. Kennedy and presented to The New York Public Library in 1896. Emmet's papers consist of correspondence and a small quantity of personal papers. Correspondence with Worthington C. Ford, letters to Walter R. Benjamin, and letters from Augustin Daly concern the purchase of manuscripts; letters to Albert Rosenthal relate to prints and portraits to be used as extra-illustrations in his books. Pynson Printers, founded in 1922 in New York by typographer Elmer Adler, was a private press that produced many limited edition books. In 1930 Adler began publishing The Colophon, a quarterly for book collectors. Both Pynson Printers and The Colophon ceased operations in 1940. Collection consists of correspondence and other materials relating to Pynson Printers and The Colophon. Bulk of the collection consists of Elmer Adler's correspondence files, 1927-1932, kept while he was running Pynson Printers and organizing and editing The Colophon. With the correspondence are memoranda, clippings, order forms for subscriptions to The Colophon, back issues, bills and invoices, notes, sketches, printed materials, and a few photographs of The Colophon. Topics include all aspects of Pynson Printers operations, matters relating to specific books printed by Pynson, and Adler's activities as a consultant on typography.
