Joel Elias Spingarn (1875-1939) was an American literary critic, poet, teacher, and social reformer. After teaching comparative literature at Columbia University, he became active in literary and public affairs. He helped to found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909 and served as president from 1930 to 1939. The Spingarn medal which he endowed in 1913 is awarded yearly by the NAACP. Collection consists of correspondence, Spingarn's writings and printed matter. Correspondence is with his wife, other family members and persons in literary and academic fields, and relates to Spingarn's interests such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and horticulture. Writings include miscellaneous lecture notes, poetry and literary manuscripts. Also, scrapbooks, newsclippings and ephemera. less

Gaffney while a member of the 29th Engineers, stationed at Camp Devens, Mass., and later with the American Expeditionary Forces in France, describing camp life, duties, recreation, and other subjects; letters from his sisters, brothers and friends describing conditions at home in New York City; correspondence, 1942-1949, of John and William Ahearn and Robert Tice, nephews of the Gaffneys, while in the Army and Air Force, sent from various Army posts in the United States, describing Army life and training, from New Guinea, Dutch East Indies, Philippine Islands, Ryukyu Islands, Okinawa, and Japan, describing their service in the Air Force and Army Ordnance Dept., living conditions, and the war in the Pacific area, and from Texas, where John Ahearn was stationed after the war. less

S.R. Leland was an American clergyman. Collection consists of letters, 1918-1919, by Leland to his wife while he was YMCA secretary with the A.E.F. in France and England, describing the English and French countryside, his duties as YMCA secretary (including problems in securing supplies and entertainment for soldiers), and conditions of troops in France. Also, letters to him and an undated account by A.E. Hungerford of the torpedoing of the S.S. Oronsa, on which Leland sailed to England. less

Charles G. Mead was a captain in the New York City Police Dept. from 1896 to 1921. He also was admitted to the New York Bar in 1906 and in 1907 established the Legal Bureau of the Police Dept. Collection consists of letters written to Mead, and typescripts and newspaper articles describing his police career. Letters were written by Charles Ennis, police reporter and Mead's friend, and describe the effect of poison gas warfare in France and remark on the administration of the Police Dept. less
