The John Van Druten papers consist of diaries, correspondence, writings, scrapbooks and ephemera documenting his life and career. The papers span the years 1901-1957 and give excellent insight into Van Druten's creative processes. Missing from the collection are scripts of his most well-known works. There are however, scripts for some plays including AWAKENING, CHANCE ACQUAINTAINCE, DANCING IN THE CHECKERED SHADE, THE RETURN HALF and SOLITAIRE. The papers also include many other literary forms: essays, parodies and poetry all written by Van Druten. less

Chandos Sweet (1882-1960) worked as a company manager, business manager, and general manager for numerous plays, touring companies and theaters in a show business career which lasted over four decades. At various times in his career Chandos Sweet worked as an actor and also served as an agent for actors, but by the late 1930s he was employed primarily as a manager, and remained active in that capacity almost to the end of his life. Sweet formed an especially close friendship with Gertrude Lawrence. Chandos Sweet died in March 1960. The Chandos Sweet papers consist mostly of correspondence, including brief notes from actress Gertrude Lawrence or her husband Richard Aldrich. There is also paperwork concerning a loan made to Sweet by actor-director Sidney Olcott in 1916, three contracts securing Sweet's services as manager for various companies, a Certificate of Merit from the Actors' Fund, and a fold-out document some 65 inches long, dated 1954 and signed by numerous members of the Lambs Club "with affectionate memories of Chandos Sweet." Signees include Frank Fay, Smith & Dale, Elliott Nugent, Harry Blackstone, Ed Begley, and Frank McHugh. less

The Leo Reisman collection contains primarily private acetate disc recordings of Reisman's radio performances of the 1930's, as well as Reisman's personal collection of commercial 78 rpm discs. Included among the noncommercial recordings are extensive holdings of his Philip Morris Show and Schaefer's nine o'clock revue appearances. Less complete holdings for Lucky Strike's your hit parade are also included. The commercial disc collection is comprised mostly of Reisman's commercially released recordings, as well as a small number of other artists' recordings. All commercial discs have been assimilated into the general holdings of the archive, and can be located in the NYPL catalog. less

Minda Lothar, author of RAGE OF JOY: THE DIVINE SARAH BERNHARDT (1968), a novel based on the life of actress Sarah Bernhardt, also wrote a paper analyzing what she termed the Avante-garde Woman personality type, primarily drawing upon women associated with the theater as her models for discussion. The typescript and notes for Minda Lothar's The Avante-garde Woman consist of 12 folders, each containing one section of the work. Textual evidence suggests that Lothar wrote this paper in 1957, but it appears never to have been published. The first chapter features analysis of the Avant-garde type as represented by fictional women, such as Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary, Henrik Ibsen's Nora Helmer and Hedda Gabler, Arthur Wing Pinero's Paula Tanqueray, and Tennessee Williams' Blanche Du Bois. In the second chapter, Lothar discusses real life actresses such as Sarah Bernhardt, Eleanora Duse, Gertrude Lawrence, and Tallulah Bankhead, as well as the French novelist George Sand. In the third and final chapter, Lothar examines the different ways these women dealt with the challenges each faced in their lives. Also included is an outline for the paper. less

Artist Rafael Valdivia was born in Rosario, Argentina. Before joining the staff of the New York Sun, ca. 1926, he worked for magazines in Buenos Aires, Paris and Madrid. Valdivia's work for the New York Sun was published under the name "Rafael." He lived with his wife and two sons in Jackson Heights, Queens, N.Y. Valdivia died at St. Anthony's Hospital in Woodhaven, Queens, N.Y. at the age of 62 in 1948. Includes ca. 142 black and white original portrait drawings of theater and film actors and actresses by Rafael Valdivia, mostly for the newspaper, the New York Sun. Among those depicted are Tallulah Bankhead, Katharine Cornell, Bette Davis, Maurice Evans, Miriam Hopkins, Gertrude Lawrence, Robert Montgomery, and Laurence Olivier. less

The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files. less

The Robert Benney research materials include photographs, clippings, posters, playbills, and ephemera relating to his career as a portraitist of stage and screen personalities. The bulk of the material spans 1926 to 1947, and consists of photographs, and clippings of Benney's work depicting New York stage performers in their roles. Many photographs and clippings depict entire stage scenes, and, in addition to stage actors, there are photographs and clippings of musicians, dancers, comics, and radio personalities, and a small number of items relating to films of the period. less

The collection consists of photographs, clippings, programs, and correspondence relating to Ziegfeld, the Ziegfeld Follies, and the revue era. With its roots in the late nineteenth century Europe, the revue has been defined as a form of light entertainment that consisted of topical sketches, comedy, music and dance, which was loosely held together by a theme. In America, the revue evolved full of spectacular effects under the inspired direction of Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr., who was often imitated but never surpassed. less
