Scope and arrangement
Correspondence, desk diaries, lecture notes, articles, photographs, sound recordings and other materials dating from 1928-1976, most of which relates to Ernst Papanek's work with children's homes in Europe and the United States. The bulk of these papers date from 1940-1970.
The Ernst Papanek papers are arranged in three series:
-
1948-1949
Correspondence; minutes of staff meetings; reports by city and state observers; statements of policy; press releases and public relations material; insurance records; financial papers; and photographs of girls, building, grounds, etc. with commentary
-
1952-1970
The audio tapes in this collection consist of lectures, oral-history interviews and other recordings relating to the career of Ernst Papanek. The recordings are described briefly by category below.
Interviews:
Most of these recordings are interviews with Ernst Papanek conducted by Edward Linn from 1959 to 1967, in which he relates in considerable detail his experiences in Nazi-occupied Europe. These interviews were the source material for the book, Out of the Fire, co-authored by Papanek and Linn.
There is also an interview with a heretofore unidentified acquaintance of Ernst Papanek tape #00017, and a radio interview with Ernst Papanek broadcast in 1970 tape #00038.
Not related to Ernst Papanek, this collection also includes an interview with baseball player Pee Wee Reese tape #00023; an interview with a heretofore unidentified equestrian jockey index #00027; and an interview with a heretofore unidentified individual about the establishment of a horse racing track tape #00020, part F. These recordings appear to have been conducted by Edward Linn for books that he co-authored on baseball and horse racing.
Most of these recorded lectures were delivered by Ernst Papanek in the late 1960's and early 1970's for regularly scheduled classes at Queens College and at the New School for Social Research, both in New York City.
